I'm interested in a particular '11' plate which I definitely want to buy.

However there's obviously a chance that the '11' plate I want could be assigned to a car as a standard number-plate.

Is it possible for me to tell DVLA I want that numberplate and for them not to issue it as a standard numberplate, but to sell it.

Has anyone done this?

From the Horses mouth:

"The series of registrations will be available in December 2010 Full details will appear on our website closer to this date.
They can not be ordered or reserved in advance."

Which plate was it out of interest... ;)
Or to give this thread some legs, my guess:

I thought you couldn't use a plate to make a car look newer than it is, so you'll need and 11 plate car or newer surely? Sounds expensive

Yep that's correct.

You can still buy the plate and keep it on retention until you have a car new enough to use it on. I've been considering KA10WAS for a while but one of the things putting me off is that it'll probably be years before I can use it.

You'll kick yourself for letting that go.

I had mine on rentention untill I got my car and at £25 a year it's hardly much.

Normally unless you purchase them you cannot transfer them. I know when you take a private plate off a car and get the originals put back on it specifically says "Cannot be transferred"

Can you transfer number plates from car to car (not private ones, just the normal ones you get when you buy a car)?

You can. My Aunt has transfered a E reg plate, nothing special they just wanted the next car to look older as it was often parked in a dodgy area, through a series of cars over the last 15 years.
