Within about a minute of posting my Volvo on gumtree, I got a suspicious reply.

You have received a reply to your Gumtree posting "1993 Volvo 940 Wentworth 2.0 turbo auto estate" (ad# 60070602) from joe larry <***@ymail.com>:

Hello,
I'm joe and i came accross your contact details through web directory (wrong website) concerning the car you have for sale (generic text) and im highly interested in purchasing it . I will like (Nigerian-like English) to know all the details about the car before proceeding with the payment.....
1. How long have you owned it?
2. Why are you selling it? (stated in the advert)
3. Last Price?
So your swift response to these required information would be highly entertained before proceeding to the next stage, the method of payment is Cheque. Kindly email back, if it's still forsale.
Hope to hear from you Asap.
Regards
joe

So far I've just replied in a relatively tame manner.

I have owned it since November last year. I am selling it as I have just recieved a company car and need to free up space to park it.

I originally bought it for £500.

Please note that if paying by cheque I will need to wait for it to clear due to the risk of fraud.

Regards,

Since I'm pretty sure this is a scam. I'm open to suggestions for replies if he gets back to me.

Gumtree, urgh. Best of luck but I'm calling scam on this one.

This isn't an "is this a scam?" thread.

This is a "help me mess with this scammer" thread.

I actually only paid £400 for it, but I'm including the cost of things I had to fix immediately, namely bleeding the brakes and replacing some perished hoses. Not including all the other stuff I fixed later on.

email me some details to nigerianAThotmail.co.uk i am looking for a road trip machine, whats wrong with it? what is the reason for sale? what is your last price?

Gumtree is an utter waste of time.

Not in my experience..

Had my 2001 Octy vRS on PH for 4 weeks and got large numbers of scammers, insulting blind offers and bizarre p/x suggestions - even though I had said no p/x as I'd bought a replacement. PH has sold my last 3 cars so I was on the verge of knocking money off the car to shift it when someone suggested gumtree to me. Rather than the detailed ad I had put on ph I just spent 5 minutes cobbling something together and kept the same asking price. Figured it was free so had nothing to lose. Within hours I had a phonecall expressing serious interest and 2 days later the same person bought it and gave me my full asking price minus 20 quid for their petrol to come and see it! Needless to say I was chuffed :)

not saying there aren't muppets on gumtree but I wouldn't completely write it off as worse than everywhere else..

Back in Nigeria, his father is a chief!

On track i wouldnt sell a packet of crisps on Gumtree. Even advertising jobs on there gets you a very special type of applicant.

I know the guy that runs that site :)

Thinking of giving the name of george adagwengo (only spelt correctly) and the address of my local police station, in Welsh so it doesn't actually say police anywhere.

Not sure what to do about the phone numbers though. Don't want the guy ringing me. Can you get free PayG SIMs still?

Edit: Something like this:

Please send the moneys to my accountant, his details are:

George Agdgdgwngo
Gorsaf Heddlu Coed Duon (Translation: Blackwood Police Station)
Blackwood Road
Coed Duon
NP12 2XA

Please include a printout of this email and include the vehicle registration number: L901 SGP with your cheque so that he can be sure it is from you. Be sure to include your details and those of your client as well.

George will then arrange with your client to do the needful.

Regards,

(me)

Well after thinking about this, I've decided it best to ignore the guy.

However since he is clearly just auto responding to every advert posted I've set up a fake email address and responded to a fake advert. Lets see how much I can get him to believe:

Hi there Joe.

Since you are speaking English I assume you are not from the Socialist Republic of Cymru. Please accept my apologies for my poor English language skills as I do not get much opportunity to practice it these days.

I am happy to sell my tractor to you but please note that I can only accept payment in Welsh Leeks due to banking regulations. Please can you tell me what country you are from so I can advise you on export procedures.

In answer to your questions:

1) I have owned the tractor from new

2) I have had my driving licence revoked due to a medical condition

3) I am asking for COK 240,000

I look forward to hearing from you.
