Hey, this will be my first build from scratch, I've only ever upgraded a part here or there before. I decided I wanted a fairly good computer for gaming and have ordered the following:

Asus P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
£102.12
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
£157.44
Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/LGA1156/LGA775/AM2/AM2)
£57.01
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5670 512MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
£59.57
OCZ StealthXStream 700w Silent Power Supply
£54.46
Geil Black Dragon 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Triple Channel (GB36GB1333C7TC)
£112.33
NZXT M59 Mid-Tower Windowed Case - Black
£39.99
DPD Next Day Parcel: £9.00
VAT: £103.59
Order Total: £695.51

I already have a HDD, screen, KB, mouse so these were not required.

I'd appreciate feedback from people about what they think and any suggested changes. I am having it all delivered in just over a week so could make a change or two. I can't really afford to spend very much more so if there are any things you would change please don't suggest anything massively more expensive.

The graphics card: I wanted something DX11 compatible and with this option I can always Crossfire if it's not enough, as I said, I can't really spend much more than this atm and this is where I've cut costs. Are there any good alterntives?

MB/CPU + Cooler: Chose these due to wanting to overclock, good combination?

Would really appreciate some feedback, even if it's just that the components will work well together.

Thanks

Well if it is for gaming i definitley suggest changing the order. change the i7 for i5 or something AMD. you probably wont need that beast of a cooler either. someone will spec you something.

The i7 CPU will be so wasted on that card you would need to go up to atleast a 5870 to even to start to tax a 920 so it might be advisable to drop to an i5 processor with a 5770 gfx card or better from the savings

I kind of had my heart set on the MB, CPU + cooler combo, seemed fairly solid

Also, I'll be using it for a fair bit of CAD, dunno if this makes a difference

It is a really good idea to go i7 at the moment, especially with the offers we have on 920 D0s and the P6T motherboard. It doesn't actually work out much more than i5 or AMD and it far better performance for the money.

I'd opt for a StealthXstream II over the original one as it has better effiency, I'd also get a better GF than the 5670 probably a 5770 or 5850, I would also change the case as NZXT aren't the best quality and don't always have the needed airflow. Cases are more preference though.

you could downgrade the fan for the cooler because it is quite an expensive fan.

i think this would suit you nicely :)

So would swapping the current 5670 to a 5770 be the best option, thinking about this one:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-018-C3

And I could always Crossfire them as well.

I'm reluctant to swap the CPU because I'd rather spend £300 in a couple months on better graphics and have an amazing setup, than be wishing I'd stuck with the i7. Plus it'll only save ~£50, if that, if I swapped

Edit after seeing posts:

Are there any cases in that price range anyone would recommend?
I'd quite like a window to show off what I've got and good airflow is a must.

Wisdom.

Ok, so I'm pretty much certain about the 5770 now, but the StealthXstream II - not sure about paying about £20 extra, how much better is it? I'd prefer to spend the money getting something which is modular. Since I've never chosen a PSU before I decided to go for a quality brand with a high enough wattage, didn't really know what else to look for.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've gone with some but not all of it. In the end I decided to get:

Asus P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
£102.12
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
£157.44
Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/LGA1156/LGA775/AM2/AM2)
£57.01
LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM
£12.76
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ)
£47.65
Geil Black Dragon 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Triple Channel (GB36GB1333C7TC)
£112.33
NZXT M59 Mid-Tower Windowed Case - Black
£39.99
Club 3D ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB Overclocked GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
£108.93
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply
£62.97
DPD Next Day Parcel: £9.00
VAT: £124.29
Order Total: £834.49

So basically I stuck with the i7, but massively upgraded the graphics. My intention is most likely to Crossfire two 5770's down the line, or sell on the 5770 and get something (possibly two) more powerful. I also went for a modular PSU and added a HDD and DVD drive. So excited to get it, will arrive Tuesday week, going to have so many boxes lol.
