HD5770 or HD4870

If you can get a good enough deal on the 4870x2 then sure, why not. But those things will pump out a lot of heat and drain a lot of power.

Might want to look at a 4890 instead too?

28 amps on the 12v rail?????? For the love of god buy a new PSU!

A 4870x2 pulls (according to sources) 20-25 amps on the 12v rail. Add to that the power requirements for the CPU and you'll be pulling more power than the PSU can provide, resulting in random shut-downs when under load and severely shortening the lifespan of the Power supply. Depending on the quality of the Voltage protection, you might get lucky, and the power supply might go bang, taking one or more components with it!

First and most depressing rule of computer builds: Get a decent PSU. You only know the PSU is working properly when nothing out of the ordinary happens :(

Would the 5770 run ok in bc2 on 1920x1200? I was planning on saving for a 5850 but it seems a lot of money for me to save given my financial state atm so im thinking of getting a 5770 now then another once i can afford it. This is really me being impatient so what do you guys think? hold out and save longer for the 5850 or get a 5770 now then crossfire at a later stage?(sorry for thread hijack)

Errr, 1000W is amazingly overkill. For the system your proposing you dont need more than a DECENT 500w one. Not all PSUs, like cars, are made equal.
Buy a 500w from the likes of Corsair, Antec, Enermax, Seasonic etc and you'll be set, do NOT buy a cheap PSU.

Well is that not for me to decide, whos to say i dont want to quad xfire soon.
The psu i have isnt far off the corsair, @ 52 amps, oh and usibg cars as an example is wrong!!!

so xfire hd5770's good or bad route?

Both the 4870 and the 5770 fall in the same performance category.

Probably the 4870 is slightly better, but, lacks dx11 and all the other goodies.

Personally Id go 5770 and look to crossfire it, when if you need, rather than buy already redundant technology.

Only down side to the 5770 is its only half the peak bandwidth of the 4870, but if you where to crossfire it, supposedly 2x 5770 are nearly as good as a 5870, so its definetly a viable option.

think im decided. a 5850, and im going to swap this mother board for a ati xfire capable one then go xfire on the 5850

Go for it m8 and try to get the 1920x1080 screen too, the 5850 would be wasted on the 1680x1050 screen. You will be glad you did.

well any things gotta be better then 60fps in cod4 lol!!! still think im decided on the 5850. unless i can get hold of a 5870. tbh a 5850 from a 11950xtx is a long long way, and a crap load better!!!

If you can get a 5770 that supports voltage tweaking, that will be far better than a 4870, and just a tiny bit behind a 4890 if you OC it to 1 Ghz.

cardcomparison.jpg

well going by whats in that pic the 4870 will be a lot faster for high res work or higher AA levels due to the immense memory bandwidth difference.

your pic shows the 5770 to have ddr5 on 128bit memory interface, and shows the 4870 to have ddr5 on 256bit memory interface. the 4870 will be considerably faster.

in the end i went for the HD5770, the way i see it the dx11 is better i suppose plus any thing is going to be better then the x1950xtx!! i mean come on thats seriously outdated lol

any way got a his one dunno how good that is?

gpu-z says 850/1200

HIS generally make solid cards. Not much to tell them apart though to be fair, although occasionally they do funky coolers which can be better than the stock generic.

tell you what, the last guy must have had it matter of months or used it very well, its brand new preety much, not a spec of dust on the disc, or the card or cooler!! im preety happy same i couldnt get my hands on the 5850, BUT this 5770 is a very long way from the x1950!
