Hi, quick question for those with long memories...

A friend is after a very cheap AGP card to replace the one that has died in her Pc, would a Geforce2 card that ive seen locally be enough for browsing the net and watching the occasional movie?

Ive seen better budget options but obviously she wants the cheapest that she can get away with.

Thanks

drivers would be the issue, i guess for windows XP or whatnots, she would be fine. how much they selling for? less then like 30 quid i hope?

Using one here as a stop gap before getting a new pc and not had any problems though noticed films don't play as well any more probably because no decoding on the card?

Using XP

Video quality was a bit poo at 1600x1200 iirc.

I was about to say mine was fine when XP first came out, but resses have increased from what most were running back then. 2D quality was probably not great, but back then I'd moved from a pass through Vodoo2 so seemed great.

Worth a punt for a tenner, but not worth me trying to dig my old one out of the bits box to test it in W7 for you ;)

Edit: There will be bugger all on card decoding.

how about this this, I just had a quick look at it and it comes with MW2  (for yourself, obviously;)) seems a bargain. Card + game. Card for her, game for you

I had a Geforce 2 MX but the 64mb version. It's hard to say, It was fine for the net but that was at 1024x768 and websites were more text based compared to now, there was less flash video etc. I don't think I would spend any money on it. Also, Direct x 9 has been standard for so long, even with on-board graphics, that I can't even imagine what plug-ins wouldn't work without it. Maybe something like a 128mb 6600gt would be safer.

That 5450 is not AGP so it's no good.

I'd recommend a radeon 9200 if you can find one.Should be cheap and i had one a couple of years back and it played movies flawlessly.

I might even go a bit higher and look at GeForce 6000 series cards. Really depends on the rest of the system as well as the Operating System she uses though..

That x800 AIW on the MM would probably be perfect :)

The cheapest AGP card will be fine - browsing the net and watching movies don't use the 3D part of the GPU at all, so it will just end up being 2D card basically.

It should be perfectly fine for 2D use. In fact, I think the GeForce 2 actually has a proper 2D engine, unlike new cards that don't. So it might actually be better. ;)
