Hi guys, a friend of mines recently bought a computer off overclockers and now it's effectively given me the I must have a new computer bug!

I'm currently running a

qx6800, 4gb 400mhz ddr1 ram, with twin Bfg 8800gtx's, I put it together myself about 3 years ago, but i've had niggly little problems with it like video stuttering, frame rate drops and similar issues so i'd like to try and avoid building the system myself again and have some kind of fallback if im having trouble getting it to run properly, I've also failed when attempting to overclock the thing too, I'd always get unstability and artifacting in games when trying to use anything but stock settings.

I was looking at the Ultima Dreadnought on overclockers and thought that would do me nicely, the only thing i've heard is the gigabyte motherboard in that has some complaints about electrical noises emitting from the capicitors need the processor socket, does anyone know if this is a common concern with with the GA-X58A-UD3R or is it a rarity?

I'm open to any suggestions, if you guys think I'd do better to buy parts seperately instead of going with the ultima dreadnought setup and not have any compatibility issues and an easy time overclocking it, i'm up for that! I've also been very pro intel/nvidia in the past, but i've been out of the game so long i'm not even sure what the difference between intels and amds are at the moment! I've a maximum budget of give and take £1,500, OS required.

Thanks!

Thanks for the spec stulid, I just don't know if im convinced with the ati/amd setup, wouldn't I benefit more from an i7 setup?

Sorry my bad, it's currently DDR2 PC2-9200 ocz reaper in the old girl, been so long I cant bloody remember whats in the thing! :p

Haha, good job it isnt ddr1 :D

Use stulids, but see if you can make it fit, and stick the OS on one of these instead of the SSD he said, this will be like Lightning! :)

Like stick one 5870 in, a 850W PSu and it may fit? :D

A single 5850 GPU would be more beneficial imo as you could always add another in the future and get better performance than 5970.

As for PSU I would recommend Corsair HX series, as these are known to be rock solid, quiet and all round great performers (and the added bonus of modular).

Best option atm is definitely i7 as it can be had for such an awesome price bundled with the Asus P6T in comparison to an AMD build.

Check this out;

I left the case out once again as this is personal preference.

Forgot W7 but I'm pretty sure you can count :p

Thanks guys, loving the suggestions, absolutely love the idea of that revodrive (got dual raptors at the moment), it's just ashame its not out yet! I'd like the ability to add that as an upgrade at a later date!

I'm definately sold on an overclocked bundle espcially if its just hassle free overclocking! i'd probably lean more towards the i7 after reading up on test systems that use it compared to amds.

Everyone has built a system using the ati 5700/5800 series, are nvidia just not a viable option at the moment, like i've said i've always sort of prefered nvidia cards, no paticular reason i suppose!

The other thing is the motherboard, potentially I would like the option ability to install extras at a later date like that ssd pci-e card, an x-fi soundcard and an addition gcard to run in sli/xfire mode, will those motherboards permit that. and what kind of power supply would be required to run dual gcards? i'm also leaning towards the coolermaster dominator II case in one of stulids builds, shouldnt be any issue for space for bigger cards upgrades right?

Thanks for all the help guys, appreciated!

At the moment, it is widely considered that nVidia cards are not worth it (mainly because of Fermi's high price and temps) unless you are running SLI in which case they do scale better than ATI cards in Crossfire.

Hey guys, I think i'm sorted on spec thanks for your help, gonna order sunday night!

Just having a hard time deciding on the case now, would like something that isn't too noisey but doesn't compromise on cooling capability

I have the fractal design r2 case. Its very nice, and has dust filters on all intake fans. it only comes with two fans which are very quiet, but if your like me, you'll want to buy 3 more of the fans to keep it icy ;)

+ The cable management is pretty good too, and i'm sure it'll fit the 5870, the case takes upto 30cm cards :)

Have changed my mind and will go for the corsair cooling on the cpu!

I have to admit, i'm not really tempted to change the motherboard to the Asus Rampage III, I'm thinking for when I want to change things push the system further in like 6-12 months, I know the cost is extra and I don't really mind going over budget to include that, Bad, stupid or idiotic idea? lol!

Get another cooler if you want to. You can save some cash by getting rid of one of the HDDs; putting it towards a better mobo would be the best choice.
