Hi guys,

Leaving the UK tommorrow, my HTC Desire is set not to allow Data Roaming.

Can I trust it or should I manually disable widgets, updating, etc?

Not sure Fox, but I will be in a similar situation myself in a couple of weeks. Id be tempted to try it, and keep an eye on it through an app that monitors your usage and if it does use it, just turn off the mobile internet as suggested above.

Get APNDroid off the market. This will entirely disable the mobile internet, making sure no apps can use it in the background. Used it in Spain this week, and seems to have done the job.

I think APNdroid changes the APN so the mobile can't communicate even when mobile internet is on. This might help so you can have mobile internet on for wifi but then it definitely won't communicate over 2g/3g.

I was in the states and Canada at Christmas and my HTC Hero was fine with just setting it to disable roaming data. The network bars that normally have g/3g/h etc was being shown as 'r' so that should show you that its working.

Worked perfectly for me a few weeks ago, even when I lauched the browser to use GPRS it needed confirmation; to ensure.

surely that's what the wifi option is for ;)
mobile network/internet is for the edge,3g,etc not wifi.

I'm off to america in 9days, going to take my o2 sim out and use a usa payg(do they have that sort of thing in america?).

Yeah, turning off mobile network should be fine. I just used APNDroid to make absolutely sure, since I've seen people say that some apps can still background update somehow even if it's off. Don't know how much truth is in that, but I'd rather not come back home to a huge bill.

Surely turning off 'Mobile Network' acheives the same thing?

Yep. On my last 2 android phones, when I hit my monthly usage limit, doing this worked.
