MG ZS 180

306 GTI-6.

You won't get as clean/tidy/new example as you would if you went the Xsara VTS route, but £2,000 isn't exactly going to get you a dog of a GTI-6. Brilliant cars, relatively reliable, relatively economical, epic engine.

I wouldn't if I had equity that can release the cash instead.

nearly £100/m for three years is quite a commitment.

It really isn't - it's what, three Virgin media subscriptions? 5% or less of pay?

Selling all your posessions every time you need a bit of cash is a route you don't neccesarily need to take if you've got a decent, stable job and its debatable whether its a 'better' option :)

If it is a lot of money then maybe performance cars should go on the back burner for a bit :)

Most people pay that per month for an iphone, some internet and some cable TV!

It's not a trivial throwaway amount but less than £100 PCM is a small enough sum for it to be a very worthy option instead of selling posessions etc :)

I do like the way you keep editing your post in a bid to sound as patronising as possible :)

I didn't think the original post was obvious enough in what I meant.

Sure, £100 isn't much in the grand scheme of things - but if you're happy to change to a cheaper car to release the money you require then this seems like a far more favourable option than financing a relatively trivial amount whilst committing to £100/m for three years.

To be honest I'd go out on a limb and say there is potential for a £2k 'performance car' to end up irritating him to the tune of £100 a month extra anyway.

If he had £2,000 and wanted this sort of car, I wonder how many would be suggesting he should borrow £3k more and get a CTR.

Not every month for the next 3 years...

None?

Why on earth would we suggest that he more than doubled his budget when there are plenty of cars that fit the criteria?

Really? I cannot think of many sub £2k 2002 or newer performance cars, can you?

Infact all I can think of is the MG ZS and the Xsara VTS.

I've purposely ignored the age requirement because quite frankly it is stupid.

Because that's just what was suggested a few minutes ago. He keeps the car and borrows £3k instead.

It is not the same.

Someone "downsizing" to a £2,000 car is almost certainly going to be in an entirely different financial position to somebody who has scraped together £2,000 to buy a "Performance" car.

Also the KV6 doesn't suffer HGF.

Most 800 owners would disagree :p

2.5 KV6 in the 800's are notorious for it and it's the same engine fitted to the 75/MG.

I know they improved the gaskets after the 75 was released but these have still been known to go (albeit not as common).

Regular checks and serviceing must be done to minimalise the risk.

As a ZS owner (although merely 110 :)) I would recommend them to someone looking for a cheap fun car. I paid £1300 and it makes me smile every time I go round a corner. The interior did seem awful at first but I got used to it and its actually very functional, nice big clicky buttons :p. I would upgrade the sound system though as the stock speakers are a pile of toss.

I don't know if you saw my epic thread, but needless to say I completely get this. If people don't understand that 1200 quid a year into your savings isn't a decent chunk then I'd probably not listen to them.

However, you're not freeing up that much, which could easily be absorbed if you buy a lemon. I started trying to find something fun and cheap but I realized that I was better going for cheap and reliable to give me more to put back into savings. It was easier for me because I've managed to wangle access to sone weekend fun for almost no money, so a boring car was an easy choice - a 1500 quid accord.

Actually, I might be onto something.... Accord type r?

Agree with everything Phate said although when I had mine the only problem was a cracked thermostat, which cost me £50 to replace and half a day of Phate's time :p

O and smashing the rear of the car on my driveway wall
