The giveaway was "I don't want a Skoda". There are other Skodas than the Fabia, in fact there is an entire range! And people buy them.

I'm going to ignore the list of I wants as 90% of cars from the last ten years meet the spec. Basically the OP is a typical young buyer who wants peer confirmation of his limited focused choice. It's got to be European, can't be a big seller (so that's Ford and Vauxhall out), or uncool (the Skoda prejudice) so that leaves Pug, Renault and the non-value VAG brands. Next comes price, so that's the Golf out unless he gets a untidy example. Carcraft Clio anyone?

Can pick up a decent one and will outlive any Ford/Renault

My requirements are:
5 Door Yup
Has to be economical, good MPG Yup
Has to last a while and be reliable Yup
Has to be good! Yup
I want it to be quite safe too Yup

I think id prefer a very nice fiesta for that money over a Clio. Although i don't really know what you can get for 3k in terms of mondeo'ness or focus'ness.
