Got back before and have now had a chance to go through my photos. Was staying in south Spain, near Seville, and although the weather wasn't ridiculously hot, it was very pleasant, and provided some nice clear skies.

All photos were taken with my D40 and a Tamron 17-50mm, since that was all I could manage to fit in my hand luggage.

I'm pleased with both of them, especially the star trails. Although I did enjoy looking at the milky way, this photo was at the limit of my equipment. I had to use ISO 3200, and about a 90 second exposure, and then do some work to remove the trailing. Still like it though, since it's the first time I've been able to properly capture it, and maybe a bit more work can clean it up more.

Thanks for looking

It's not as hard as it seems really. If you've got a clear night, just set your camera up on a tripod, set it to ISO400 and the lens wide open, and then use a remote shutter to take about a 30 minute exposure. The only extra bit of equipment you need really is the remote shutter.

Also, I find it's worth doing just a quick 30 second exposure at the beginning to check your composition.

Hope that helps a bit, there's quite a few good guides around, which is how I learnt.

Yeah, takes a bit of practice to know how long to do it for, but just give it a go on a clear night, and take a few. Best way to learn is to try.
