High powered GPU = high energy bill?

Well my i7 @4.2 and a 5870 at stock pull 190watts idle with 5 case fans running, average around 280watts when the gpu is maxed out and 380 watts with both cpu and gpu maxed. Most games i play bfbc2, fsx etc pul the 290watts for most of the time. I only ever see it go above this when running benchmarks. These readings are all from my inline energy monitor which only measures the power going to my pc.

Leaving two computers on over night made no difference to normal according to the electricity meter thing (stayed on 2p).

They draw more power when they're under load, but that's rare.

Now being a bachelor again, my energy bill never exceeds £20 per month, with a PC* (or a PS3/50" Plasma combo) working at any time I'm at home.

Including, grill, toaster, fridge.

While living with my ex-wife, the energy bill never went below £90 per month.
So if you think you energy bills are high, ditch your girlfriend/wife.

*Q6600 overclocked to death and overclocked 5850

Since my GF moved in my electric bill has gone from £30 a month to £70 a month!

I never dare look at my electric bills.. ( direct debit then I never have to know how much it costs :)

I run 3 machines.

- Server which draws about 500w and runs 24/7

- Media rig which draws about 200w runs 24/7 but goes into standby for about 12 of that.

- Gaming / development righ + 3 monitors draws about 1kw and running about 12 hours a day 7 days a week.

OUCH..

Similar story here.

She did do a lot more clothes washing than me though (4 days out of a pair of pants kind of guy ;) ).

So the moral of the story is:
Lonely nerds are good for the environment.

Don't forget those bloody ghd hair straightner things, my meter jumps up when those gets switched on!

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but by my maths, at 11p/kwhr his average stated 1100W usage works out at £87 per month.

So a grand a year. Which sounds about right, as most lower middle class families of 4 use about that level of power and pay about that.

sorry i meant per month

but it depends if he has Economy 7 or different rates at different times of the day

mine is 34p/kwh from 8am to 1am then drops to 5p/kwh at 1am to 8am.

my bill per 3 months is around ~£190 in the summer. winter is around £300+, due to heating been on most night (3x storage heater at 3000kw , so 9000kw total.) ..

I'm not sure what mind costs me but 4870x2 has a high power consume even on idle but my Gas and electrics £49 a month but all the heating n gas etc in this house is brand new and uses allmost none so i guess that helps but my electrics pretty damn cheap.

i have 1 question...

my tariff as 2 Day units .

Day units first 900kWh per year 34.3455p per kWh
Day units 13.713p per kWh
Night units 5.0925p per kWh

which one do i use on the monitor,?

seen i had the electric monitor i've set it to 34p day and 5p night..

Unless you use your computer in those 7 hours, then dont use that figure at all.

Your other two figures seem a bit... high. Checking out my npower figures mine is a more or less constant 14/13p split, and its not as if I'm paying by direct debit or using fancy online billing.

Do those, and you can get the near constant 11p type rates I used above. I thought economy 7 was bad unless you worked night shifts?
