There used to be Massive meets in Wales back in Desmo, Matt & Piggys day.

That was obvious Pete & I've appreciated you at least coming back with constructive posts. :)

I love the Humour & the Banter & I also like trashing some random that is delusional but on the other hand I like to feel a part of the community & i like the atmosphere to be Warm to regulars whether they are just Lurkers or posters.
We All make mistakes, It's how we respond to them that shows you for what you are.

As a lurker who is in interested in Photography I've always felt reasonably happy coming to the photography forum but wouldn't class myself as particularly active in here.

I also like cars and know a reasonable amount but steer clear of the Motors forum for the reasons malc has mentioned. I find it tedious how quite a few of the people in there assume they are better than others, particularly when it spills into other forums. TW Fox is a prime example of this, he quite often starts mentioning people's cars in threads in other sections as a way to try and bring them down.

If it means anything; I'm not part of any clique in Motors but feel more comfortable posting there than I do here. I don't know much about cars and I don't know much about photography but I am able to read into advice on both sides and make my own mind up.

People who feel some way about words on the internet need to MAN UP and stop being such sissies.

/me throws Snicker bars at everyone

Motors is OK, there's plenty of rational posters and of course plenty of self proclaimed oracles, but that's half the fun :) It can be a bit petty though, whoa betide you if you misquote a car designation! Having said that I haven't been in there much of late so I don't know if it has got better or worse.

I'm not sure this is serving much purpose but I've never found motors too intimidating, I've asked for advice/ideas a few times over the years and sensible stuff has come back and people haven't pushed the case or been nasty if I've said 'yeah, I don't fancy x'. I've also posted advice in a few threads (mainly 4x4 stuff) and not been abused for my limited knowledge. I don't hang out there but I've never seen it as elitist or anything like that...

The problem with the motors section is that there are a small number of twenty-something year olds who feel the need to belittle anyone who hasn't got a performance or prestige vehicle. Heaven forbid if you ever go in there saying you've bought a brand new diesel, its the OCUK equivalent of putting a noose around your head.

When was the last time anyone came into this section and said "they bought camera X from a high street store" and got jumped on by the regular posters for not buying from ebay/online specialist, or saying "OMG you didn't buy a Nikon/Canon? Looser!". It doesn't happen thankfully, the Motors section appears to be uniqie on these boards.

Anyway I've stopped posting in there which is a pity because there is a lot of good discussions and I'm a big motors fan, but I refuse to engage with the continued bullying of (usually new) members.

I have only posted once in the motors section and it wasn't a bad experience got a friendly reception about my car even Fox said something nice :D

But I do go else where for my motors talk as my car is not worth talking about here anyway its rubbish :(:p

Never posted in here I don't think but then I don't need any advice on point and click shooting :D

I stopped posting in motors when someone proclaimed to know more about insurance than a private car underwriter who has been doing his job for 20 years heading one of the largest private car accounts in the country.

There is almost no point asking for advice in motors to what cars to get. The answers are mostly the same. Under £2k you'll get a Mondeo to get as a response. Under £5k budget you'll get a Focus as the car of choice as response. Under £10k you get more varied answers but secondhand, BMW will come in somewhere.

There is no room for personal preference. What if i grew up liking to get a Classic Mini Cooper? And seen a 1994 Monte Carlo edition with 5,000 miles on the clock for £9,000? Sure you can get a lot of other cars for £9,000 but that's not the point. The point is fullfilling a childhood dream. Who cares about practicality, who cares about modern car gizmos or running costs. Those things one would be willing to sacrafice PRECISELY because one want something he has been yearning for for years.

Motors don't get that.

I find the same example here in Photography section with regards to cameras though. Anything under £500, Canon Nikon. Anything under £1000, Canon Nikon. Anything under £5000, Canon Nikon :p

That's just common sense :p

In fairness though, that is generally the best route to go - you'll get to the stage where you want to get the readily available lenses for Canon/Nikon, which you can't with Sony/Olympus. Also, didn't you recently swap to Canon? :p

:D

From reading his other threads, he has still probably just had an outburst which has got him banned, but he did also used to just get slightly picked on (especially with his Passat pics thread) - but again, I guess he was targeted a little here too. It is annoying though when someone asks for advice and genuinely does whatever he can not to take it, in this case D3, D3s, D3x and D700 or whatever in his mind...till he found sense in our advice and is going for a D90/300 :p

I reckoned over here in Photography 2BL genuinely was trying to improve, whereas over in Motors he was just taking the bait.

He didn't take criticism the best, but it was all constructive compared with Motors where it was more of a witch hunt with some people out to get him. Though he did kinda ask for it!

Thing is, they are actually the best cars in their class though so of course they are going to get recommended.

And if you wanted help with finding a Mini then you'd get tons of advice regarding that car. No one would suggest otherwise unless at the bottom of your post stated that they are open to suggestions for something similar. That's something a lot of people miss.

And when it comes to recommending cameras... the normal response is Canon or Nikon... because they are the better brands.. never Sony or Pentax.
