Hi. Doing 70 mph in 6th brings up 4500 rpm on the A55. Its usually around 3000. Does anyone know what could be causing it to go that high? I know the gearbox is quite short ratioed but it isn't that short.
The car supposedly has a 145mph top speed but doing over a ton brings it into the redline.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Sounds like it has the wrong ratio gearbox in it. How old is the car & what car is it ?

Slipping clutch is quite likely, although I'd expect other symptoms too. Try nailing it in a high gear at low speed, if the revs start climbing quicker than the car is accelerating then the clutch is definitely slipping

Thanks its a Hyundai Coupe V6. So a slipping clutch can cause you to pull really high rpm then? Is there anything else I can test for a slipping clutch?

What car is it? If it's something with one of those electronic paddle shifts or something.. it could be selecting the wrong gear.

Other wise slipping clutch is also possible. But for it to be slipping that much id expect you to be having loads of problems pulling away etc
tbh.

Get yourself at 30mph on a slight incline in 4th gear and give it some beans. Should b-able to tell from that.

I test clutches by stickingg the handbrake on sticking the car in 3rd & taking my foot off the clutch. If it stools it's good if you can keep the engine runnings it's ******.
Or you could just find a hill & try to climb it in a low gear.

Slipping clutch usually becomes noticeable in top gear first. By the time you can detect it in lower gears it's nearly dead.

The old foot-down-in-top-from-low-revs is still about the best test.

I find this isnt always a good tell tale as i had a new clutch on my focus and could pull away in 3rd same with my old clio. Think it depends a bit on the car

Clutch would have to be totally fubar to slip while cruising along at 70 surely. With 1500rpm's worth of slip constantly it would heat up pretty quickly too. Sounds very bizarre to me.
Anyway, the simple way to check if this is happening is to answer this. Take your foot off the gas, do the revs drop right back to 3000 immediately? If so then yeah its a clutch issue, I doubt it though.

Oh I forgot to say some check light (engine managment) came on last week but its gone away now. The reason why i'm asking here is I don't want to get raped by a garage.

Nope. I tried this and it takes a while.

Manual. 6 speed. Anyway thanks for your help guys. I'll take it to an indy and see if he can find anything.
