Fan Modification or Replacement Advice

I recently just purchased a Apevia Discovery PC Case and have noticed that the fans that come with the case have 4 pin molex connectors on them. Now as the mobo I have got is an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo I obviously need to either get a couple of 4 pin molex to 3 pin fan connectors or replace the fans.

Now recently I built my son-in-law a tower using Zalman Quiet Fans. These things come with Silicon Pins rather than screws to attach to the case and I can tell you that these fans are from from the word quiet. The only way they become quiet is by using the special connector that comes with them, which reduces the speed to half it's RPM. The so called special connection as a resistor on it and I believe it cuts the power down from 12v to 5v or something along them terms.

Now what I would like to know is can you actually buy these special connectors that come with the Zalman fans. Because I was thinking of using a 4 pin molex to a 3 pin fan connector and using one of these special connectors that reduces the fan voltage from 12v to 5v and I think very much by doing this I will have 2 quiet fans without replacing them.

Yes you can. There are 7v (RC-56) and 5v (RC-100) versions but Zalman also do a molex to 4x 3pin fan connectors where two of the 3 pin connectors are rated at 12v and the other 2 at 5v. It's called the ZM-MC1 . The resistor versions are a couple of quid each and the molex to 4x 3pin version is around £3-4.

Thanks very much for that. I had a spare Zalman Fan left from the last PC I built and have an RC-56 in there. So I only need to get another 1 of those to do the job. Not sure of the Zalman ZM-MC1 connector though, really I just want a standard 4 pin molex to a 3 pin fan connector so that I can plug the the 3 pin into the RC-56 and then into the board.

Yes Fan Controllers are a more expensive option, and not only that I do not have a spare bay for one. I just want to make the fans that come with this case quiet thats all, and I should be able to do that for around £3 to £4 so no problem job sorted.

if you just want to drop the voltage on the fans to 5V, swap round the outside wires on the fan's molex connector, as these are the 5V and 12V power lines. The inner two are just grounds.
