I love you guys

I prefer this forum to others because it isn't only for a particular brand and that although small it has a higher quality.

Perhaps being attached to a computer hardware forum means we apply the same cold harsh logic but to cars instead of components.

With computer parts you can't go too far wrong. Obviously you get the odd person buying a black edition CPU that won't overclock or the nVidia fanboy but the hate to carcraft numpties and short mileage diesel users is even higher than that of Mac users.

I like it.

The other thing people forget is that other places are just as bad if not worse, you should have seen the thread on pistonheads about that Astra at the ring! And as that video on car specing showed other forims bring up finance etc

It's the lack oF chavs that I like. Sure they crop up from time to time but they're quickly banished back into their holes

This forum is not somewhere you should come for honest individual advice, it's more a Jeremy Clarkson irrational extremes hive that is, to be honest, quite entertaining, I like Top Gear, and I like this place..

Having several JC clones and lots of aspiring wannabe's you are always guaranteed a bit of a laugh.. The fact their usually black and white 'opinion' means that there are only ever 1 or 2 cars that they can ever recommend is so at odds with the real world where many people enjoy many different cars blissfully unaware...

Oh, and the fact the main protagonists usually have the worst driving ability records just puts the icing on the comedy cake..

Long live OC UK Motors!!!!

Well put :) However there are some good people here who know a lot about what they are on about and i appreciate those people. However its the element of some people showing up others for fun, slating their decisions and making fun of it if it dosen't match theirs, the air of superiority and visions of grandeur that some people have really annoy me. The bandwagonness of a lot of people annoys as well, if one person decides to make fun of something, regardless if the op was serious it seems a lot of other mindless people just want to be part of the in crowd and dance to the same tune, reminds me a lot of the school i work in, especially from years 8-11

I love this motors forum and rarely go else where , I love the brutal honesty and the clowns that we get (twoblacklines , carcraft boy ect) and the threads that happen as a result of them

This is true but at least its indiscriminate - I *still* get jokes about dents in leather even though in reality it was a fairly sensible question :p

blissfully unaware that their cars are inferior to the competition? Quite probably!

LOL, Do you realise that the vast majority of people (even in this forum) drive cars that aren't in your narrow selection of optimal car choices, and yet seem to be happy, should tell you something... :D

Hey, I like this place, people used to infuriate me, but once you 'get' the Top Gear aspect of this place, it's great!!!

Oh, and I was not trying to infer there wasn't any good advice on here, just 'individual advice', i.e. tailored to the individual.. People's inability to accept that everyone is different, and trying to offer good advice that is relevant to them, without pushing their own ideals down their throats is where is all goes a bit Pete Tong, but it sure is fun to see it all unfold..

chill :D

Ignorance is bliss as they say :)

If you dont know about an alternative, or beleive an alternative to be unobtainable, you'll be happy with what you've got.

Case in point: I loved my Citroen.

Many people are happy to wake up, decide to buy a new car, stop at the closest dealer to home and buy a new Peugeot. If that makes them happy thats great but they shouldnt expect everyone else to post 'hi m8 if that makes u happy then congrats' if they ask for opinions on an internet forum.

There are lots of things in this world that make people happy simply because they don't know any better.

Sure its easy to say 'If it makes them happy then whats the problem?' but there is no problem - this is just a discussion and debate forum where things will be discussed and debated.

Debating is a valid and enjoyable hobby - this is why most Universities have a debating society, for example. It's older than the bible as a passtime.

I feel this is slightly unfair, actually. I am always very keen to ensure when I offer advice it is not what I'd do, but what I beleive is best for the OP. This is why you rarely ever see me suggesting somebody goes and buys a 5 Series BMW, even though thats actually what I'd do. If anything I'm usually advising people against such a path..

There are people who will post what they'd personally buy whatever - leading to all sorts of amusing posts like suggestions of 10 year old Jap sports cars for people who really would be better off with a 3 year old Golf - but these just give us more things to laugh at and are present on every non make specific car forum in the world.

Hence that funny video about the single mom - which is based on American forums. I think its pretty daft so suggest that either:

a) This forum is unique
b) It will ever change, unless human nature itself changes.

I love this forum and even though I don't post very much I probably spend the most time on it out of them all. There is some very good advice and some very knowledgeable people - particularly on the JDM side of things which is great for me - and this is tempered nicely by the mini-me Clarkson wannabes.

We need more James/Car Craft moments though.

While that's true, it still doesn't explain why many many acknowledged Petrol heads still drive cars that aren't the 'class leader', and get as much or more enjoyment as they would if they had the class leading car, and categorically it isn't always about being ignorant about the class leading cars.. ;)

People are complex, applying simplistic rules as you do, is a valid point of view, and one of the reasons that this place can be a great respite from the rest of the world..

I think the distinction in reality is that the criteria that is used to define a class leading car is actually quite removed on some levels to the criteria that the vast majority of people use when buying a car, simply because a lot of individual criteria is not generically quantifiable.. :)

As long as a car is reasonable 'exploitable', you'd be surprised at what even some die-hard petrol heads criteria list may be.. To give good individual advice, you need to understand what they want from a car.. as you can see by what people drive, it isn't always about being class leading, and not because they are ignorant of the experience of a class leading car..

Peace...

:)

I like the advice you get on bike forums.. which is largely 1 golden rule.. Go and test ride all the bikes in that class, and see what you like.. Plain, simple, and tolerant of choice.. Now see a spec me thread on here and see at what point people suggest that test driving the cars is a good way to see if the OP would actually like them...

Cars are a personal thing, it's like art, some people are going to like one thing, others another. That's the trouble with opinions, everyone has one and they are all wrong ( except mine).

(seriously, who needs a spec me thread when you can just buy a BMW and be done with it!)

DannyW ;)

But yeah, cars are personal and I know some people have poked fun at my lack of cylinders but meh, tis a fine machine if driven like a Honda ^_^

I've had the same golf tdi for the last 12 (TWELVE!!!) years. At age 23 in 1996 whilst looking at the Toyota my folks were buying I saw a new MR2 2.0L GT in the showroom that had just had a sale drop through on it, end of month and they took the call whilst we were there, the "buyer" lost his deposit and the salesman in jest said to me "nice isn't it? You can buy that now for 16k" which was something daft like 3k under list and I said ok deal"

I had that car for 2 years and it was the most fun I've ever had driving a car, prefer bikes if I'm honest but the MR2 despite being a bit hardresser just made me laugh. When I moved to notts I was moving to a not so great area with no garage and it had to go, it was traded for 15k (I owed 3k) and I walked out with a 96 reg golf tdi.

I've spent the last 12 years looking for something as fun as the MR2 and nothing has taken my fancy, the golf just keeps plodding on and there never been the need to replace it. With cars, I'm as fussy as and it has to tick every box for me to be interested in it.

I guess it's all subjective.
