So now that Froyo is effectively out there, what about the next update called Gingerbread which, allegedly, is Android 3.0

From what I have garnered from various sources, it is set for a Q4 2010 release.

OS Changes:
--------------

The OS is meant to have a big change with Android which will help decrease OS fragmentation. This is meant to be achieved by changing the setup of the OS so that each "part" of the OS is, effectively, a stand alone component which all plug into the main backbone of Android.

What I mean by this is if, for example, Google release an update to their browser or Calendar etc then these can be updated via the marketplace itself as opposed to a whole new OS being released (like 1.6 --> 2.1).

This means that even the handsets from the slowest manufacturers are kept upto date as no one has to rely on the manufacturer releasing a new update. This, in turn, reduces OS fragmentation as everyone has access to the updates.

Other features like HTML5, Open source replacement for Flash, WebM video are all touted as well.

Just thought a thread like the last one should be put up to gather all the info people find.....

apprently flash 10.1 is done like this so can be updated by adobe with out needing to update whole os.

its the way to go - more like a desktop OS.

Android severly needs to sort out its media capabilities - I find its media player for music poor, but worst of all video - its codec/resolution support is atrocious. if Android had vlc, id prob get an Android device..
