Yes, but it's not push comes to shove, or 'survival of the fittest' is it? We have no pressing need to mine the region other than $$. It's not even a case that we'd benefit, the more than likely private company allowed there will.

Lithium might be useful now and the next 5-10 years but after that I'm sure other types of better batteries will have been invented by then...this means that by the time mines in Afghanistan are fully operational in 20 years time (setting up infrastructure etc) not many people will need lithium as they would have moved to something else.
