US discovers $1 Trillion mineral deposits...

1) identify the company that will mine it
2) Buy a crap load of shares cheap, right now
3) retire a millionare in 20 years

I don't care much for these backwards nations, I feel the people would be better served with democracy, war is obviously horrible but if you are going to do it then why not get the places with the resources first. Makes sense. Worry about the nutters with nukes last.

Very handy considering China has most of the current rare minerals.

Yes, but it's not push comes to shove, or 'survival of the fittest' is it? We have no pressing need to mine the region other than $$. It's not even a case that we'd benefit, the more than likely private company allowed there will.

its all the same its just time scales.

So you are telling me that to secure a cheap/free access to a supply of one of the upcoming strategic materials to help "fuel" a revolution in electrical power, which is inevitable as we shift away from oil in the next 50-60 years isn't on the minds of the power mongers?

Its all about control and economic security. Which in my opinion will lead to war when all of them are claimed.

i play civ 4 ! i know what im talking about !!:D

I wonder if the Taliban will let them dig up there Poppy fields to get to it. :D

wow with such an amazingly valuable natural resource the afgan people should hope to enjoy the elivated life style of people in other countries with such abundant and valuable resources... like those in iraq, and the african countries that mine diamonds, it will be a major boon for the average afgan....

either that or the locals will be used as (almost) slave labour by western mining companies.. with a majority of the wealth going to western companies... and the wealth that does stay in the country going to a corrupt few to be squandered on gold plated cars, jets, wine, woman and drugs..

Lithium might be useful now and the next 5-10 years but after that I'm sure other types of better batteries will have been invented by then...this means that by the time mines in Afghanistan are fully operational in 20 years time (setting up infrastructure etc) not many people will need lithium as they would have moved to something else.

lithium is used in more than just batteries....

And Bolivia has the largest lithium reserves in the world but as yet hasn't exported a single bit. They are trying to do it all themselves instead of hiring in outside help so that they can actually see most of the money.
