Virgin Media peak times?

Sorry for the n00b question, i live in the states and im visiting the 'rents for a few months. they have VM broadband and ive fallen victim to this 'peaktime bandwidth shaping' thingy, ive read it's between 4 and 9pm, just wanted to have this confimed and make sure i understand that you can dl stuff as much as you want at any other time right? Thanks folks

the slightly tricky bit to understand is

If you download 99.999% with 1 second of the time window left NOTHING HAPPEND

if you download 100.1% with 1 seconds left you are capped for the next ?6 hours.

if you download 100.1% with 4 hours before the end of the window you are capped for 6 hours

I've found that sheet to be a little off for me where I am on VM.

Between 11-10 in the morning = Alls good no shaping max speed.

From 10am you have 3gb (I'm on 10mb, 5gb if you are 20mb) and after that it will cap you to 2mb connection for about 5 hours.

The above is also correct in terms of the allowances and when it kicks in. The best thing to do is start downloading late at night and leave your machine on overnight. You should get everything you need in that time.

Ok thanks for the info fellas, i remember it being TeleWest and no shaping at all, never had a problem. VM and all this "doing it for the customers surfing satisfaction"....my arse.

Speeds and usage have increase since it was called telewest. you can't expect usage to constantly increase without eventully having to overhaul the infrastructure or impose limits.

Under the new STM system they are trialing you are capped until the end of that STM period, hence the "maximum cap duration" ACTUALLY means what it says for a change!
