Good Racing Game

Colin mcrae 04.

I consider it the best of the pre dirt colin games, solid arcade rally game, with that just right codemasters stamp.

Or if rally sim floats, Richard burns rally.

Shouting up rally trophy, oldschool rally, unique feel to it.

Richard Burns Rally is the best sim rally game for PC to date. It's horrendously difficult, and has the steepest learning curve, but once you start to make those stages the feel (you must have a wheel with it) is brilliant.

Also, lokiss is correct on Colin McRae 04 being one of the better ones. I'm currently playing DiRT 2, and although it's a great game for many reasons, I find the RAID and Baja races etc a total chore. The trucks and buggies are awful to drive and it's not a lot of fun. I yearn for a non-Americanised rally game from Codies again, but I doubt it'll ever surface.

nah, needs to be easy to pick up, head to head competition, whilst drinking beer - I remember one in the pub which when you were behind your car was slightly faster making it a constant battle, cant remember its name???

I remember something like that!

Anyhow if your looking for a quick pick up and play arcade sort of racer, then Trackmania is the one!
And its free. Dont underestimate how good this game really is.

Trackmania is awesome, and hilarious because the tracks are so ridiculous. It's also quite competetive as it's all time-based. As for one-on-one action though, you might want to try dirt 2, as there's more knocking eachother off the tracks and into corners etc, and enough variety and eyecandy to keep you interested.

I recommend the Let's Rock servers for good tracks :)

What is the business model there? How do the developers make money?

Trackmania nations was origionaly developed for the cyber games but has evolved nicely Trackmania united forever is the full pay game and can be had for just a few quid now. And believe me when i say the trackmania community is rock solid with so many tracks to download and race and i mean a few hundred thousand at a rough estimate.

Plus the best track editer ever you are limited by just your imagination the full game is that good.
the free version nations is a great way to try out the trackmania game and has full online capability

I looooooooooooove Trackmania. Bought it a few years ago, and keep going back to it. There's nothing out there like it really.

I too play on the Let's Rock server, but have recently started playing on the cos|I FullSpeed server, as loads of ladder points are available. I think the server can host up to 140 players and it's nearly full all the time. However, all the tracks are full speed ones, whereas you actually need to brake on some of the Let's Rock tracks.

I play under the name OL and race with a Le Mans style car :)

thanks for all these - an additional requirement is to keep a kind of leaderboard, ie most wins, fastest time etc - so essentially multiple people can drive over the course of an evening and then the best players can be awarded a prize - any of these game do such a thing?

that relies on someone being there to write it down/monitor the scores - rather have it automated so I can do other things like drink beer!
