BFG 8800GT OC noise problems

I bought this card back in November 2007 and it has been great, silent card during 2D mode and only noisy when playing games which was fine by me.

However, the last 3 months or so the card is becomming noisy in 2D mode, everest reports the fan sped at 4900-5000RPM in the mornings (40%) with a temperature of 77c idle, and it will go up a bit more as the day heats up.

I have air dusted the cards fan/heatsink and the problem still persists, it used to always be around 3000RPM idle (even last year in the summer) with a idle temperature of 65c.

I dont want to get a new card, although I would like to buy a new cooler for it but I am not sure which one? I read somewhere that I need a heatsink for the mosfets too and that makes things more confusing!

Can anyone help/recommend?

I was going to fit one of these to my BFG 8800gts.......but the holes dont match up.....dont think these coolers are made for these are they?

If you have any spare thermal grease it might be worth while taking of the stock HSF, cleaning the contact plate as well as the chip and apply some new thermal paste. I can’t see any logical reason why the card will just heat up like this unless the card is on its way out (there have been lots of users posting here recently needing to replace there 8000 series card) so it could a reporting error.

Also you should get the latest drivers, if you updated a few months ago Nvidia had issues with certain 8000 series cards overheating as the driver done something to the fan speed which caused cards to overheat. I assume this has been fixed so this might be worth a shot.

Try and find an Accellero (sp) s1, I have two 8800GTs and fitted s1 to both, they are excellent coolers and come with heatsinks for ram etc, you can cable tie a 120mm fan to them for even more cooling but I didnt bother as they did an excellent job without.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I may try what you suggest first Freddie1980 as 12c increase in idle temp since last summer is quite an increase. I have some MX-2 I can reapply.

Is there anything I should bear in mind/be careful with when removing the cooler?

If all else fails I think I will look for an accelero s1! - Just found them for £17.99 new!

If you've been updating drivers grab the latest 256+ drivers - I found 191.xx, etc. drivers ran cool and quiet but somewhere around 195.xx-196.xx the heat (and hence fan speed) picked up quite a bit - around 7C higher for me... 197.4x onwards reduced it a bit but the latest 256+ drivers seem to fix it back to 191.xx levels.

Perhaps I am being daft but I can only find 197.75 on the nvidia website and thats what I have been using for a while now. Where are the 256+ ?

*edit* doh, found them under beta.

Sounds like your running older drivers, as Roff points out they can vary the temperatures significantly but there was one driver revision that caused all sorts of problems by stopping some cards from increasing the fan speed when the card got hot.

5000rpm, OMG

I have a GTX280 and lowered the fanspeed at idle to 25% (<1000rpm) and it is still the loudest part in my system

I've just installed the latest nvidia drivers (257.21) and it has made the fan speed even higher, 5708RPM (47%). It still isn't really noisy, but I dont like being able to hear my PC at all.

I am a bit worried about getting an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev2 VGA Cooler. Is it a simple process to remove my 8800GT's stock cooler then fit the new one? I have never had to change a GPU cooler as I have always gone for a passive card.

Just a case of taking the screws out, cleaning the thermal paste and applying some more.

Just replaced my BFG 8800GT after it was hitting 100+ on full load - tried applying new thermal paste and the temperatures were still going mental.

Even idle the fan was going at 100% :(

I thought I would first try to relocate my 2 hard drives which sit infront of the 8800gt (they almost block the intake fan) and then remove the 8800GT from the system and give it a good air dusting so I think a mixture of both has helped.

Temps are still high of 72c idle, but the fan speed has dropped to 4144RPM (30%) which is back down to being super quiet again :)

It used to look like this;

instead I have removed the top 2 hard drives and used my spare sycthe 3.5" -> 5.25" adapters so they sit above the DVDRW.

Thanks to all for your help, I think I may still invest in a new cooler in a couple of months!

Nothing new for most of you but..I have finally bought an Accelero S1 Rev.2 for my increasingly noisy 8800GT OC. I couldn't be any more pleased with this purchase.

I can now play Mafia II without the stock coolers fan at 100% (5600 RPM!!) in my ears! Here are some temps to comapare;

Stock fan temps:

Idle: 75c
Full load: 91c

Accelero S1 rev 2 (passive):

Idle: 52c
Full load: 73c

It still leaves me room to just about use that PCI slot if needed.

Yes it is. Also, the VRM heatsinks did not fit properly, I was only able to use two. I did however have some spare ramsinks (exactly the same as the ones that came with the S1) which worked very well!

In the first 2 years of owning the card, the fan speed wouldn't exceed 3800RPM when playing games and it was still very very quiet at those speeds.

I had removed the card on several occasions to air dust it but that did not seem to make any difference and the fan continued to run at 100% all the time during gaming.

The thermal paste on the old cooler looked pretty good too, not to thick and not to thin and evenly spread.

All in all, I am a very happy chappy. £29 for the cooler + arctic thermal adheshive for the ram/VRM sinks.
