So what would you do with around 150 old VHS video tapes? I’ve got a whole cupboard of movies on VHS and you know what… I don’t even own a VHS recorder anymore to even play them..

Half of these movies, if not more I’ve got on DVD, Blu Ray or digital media somewhere… To be honest, I’m at the stage where if I can make an mkv or avi file out of DVD’s etc then I do..

VHS is such low definition I’d rather just get rid of them. Searching ebay they are not worth anything…. I’ve seen Star Wars on VHS selling for less then a quid..!! You’d have thought a classic like Star Wars Original on VHS would be worth something.. Seems not.

I mean I guess I could hang on to them for say – two hundred years in a hope some collector would pay thousands for them… But rather reclaim some space.. lol

Was considering taking them to a charity store, would they actually want them? Did consider taking them to the local tip… The VHS collection I’ve got was amassed when I was in my teens, I stopped buying VHS back in the 90’s.

Bin them at the local tip, or send to a charity store?

Honestly do not know what to do with them all…. Seems such a shame, but that’s technology for you. VHS has gone the way of the dodo.

Most charity shops aren't interested in VHS tapes these days. We tried to get rid of a load lately and the only ones we could get rid of were childrens ones (Disney films etc) to the local NHS hospital. The rest ended up at the tip as charity shops didn't want them.

Chuck the ones you have DVD copies of and if any of the rest have sentimental value get them converted at you local photo shop - they usually have the facilities. You'll probably find that you can get a second hand DVD copy of most of the VHS films for less than a conversion will cost though.

Andi.

Lol did consider the fire option…. And no, no special interest ones. *wink*

I did think local charity shops wouldn’t want them, reason I made this post to see what others have done with there old VHS collection..

You can’t sell them or even give them away. Worthless, might as well skip the whole lot. I’ve got nothing on tape I need to keep or I cant grab on DVD for a couple of quid or not got already on DVD or some other digital media source..

It just seems such a waste though… I reckon there must be a few hundred quid’s worth of VHS tapes when purchased back in the day now destined to be set alight or crushed in a skip compactor..

I'm a bit of a nostalgia freak and collect a lot of stuff from my 80s/90s childhood. I for some reason prefer watching He-Man, Transformers, TMNT etc on VHS - got quite a collection :D

Everything else, bar a few classic horror movies, went in the bin/charity shop. Local charity shop sells crates of VHS tapes for about a quid, they are inundated with them :p

Need the government to do a collection of all unwanted VHS tapes and to build a monument out of the recycled materials.

check your local recycling facilities the ones in my area take VHS tapes and salvage the plastics to be recycled, obviously not as much fun as burning them but better for the environment if you care about that kind of thing

I would visit your local car boot sale. I wouldn't bother going as a seller and paying the sellers fee of £5 to £7, but rather to find someone else that is still attempting to sell VHS videos, then offer them all to them. People do still try to sell VHS videos at car boot sales.

Rgds

Well can’t find any information on my local council’s website about recycling old VHS tapes, so I’ll put them all in into the back of my car this weekend and drive them down to the local recycling centre and I’m sure they’ll have a bin I can use where they’ll be then recycled.

I’m fairly sure VHS will not make much of a comeback, its destined for retro, such as 8 bit gaming and old grammar phones, but as a day to day media playback source. VHS is well dead…

I mean, rewinding tapes after watching a movie is so 80’s.. Today we can’t even be bothered to watch a movie if is not via on demand or from a digital source.. who wants to put a DVD into a player.. I mean, sheesh what a mess about.!! Lol

I’m trying to remember what happened to my VHS recorder… I’m sure it went when I sold my 32” widescreen CRT TV back in 2004..!! It was broken anyhow, tapes got stuck in it.

Nobody wants them even the charity shop will pay you to keep them. So burn (not very eco friendly) or down to the recycle centre.
