Armed police mounted a major operation to protect pupils at a Merseyside school after they were alerted by the FBI, it has emerged.

Officers were called to St Aelred's Catholic Technology College in Newton-le-Willows on Friday after reports someone had made threats to kill there.

The alarm was raised by the FBI, who picked up a threat posted on the social networking site Facebook.

The school said it was the FBI - The United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation - who raised the alarm after internet scanning software picked up a suspicious combination of words.

A bit crazy when you think about it - possibly every word you publicly write on the internet is scanned? Tempted to test it, but not that much.

I thought the same thing when I saw this just now, intriguing. Lets see if they pick up "Screw off FBI"...

It pretty much is.

Grab a copy of James Bamford's book 'The Shadow Factory' and it starts to tell you a little about the monitoring that's done and what kit they use from the likes of Narus etc. It's mostly about the NSA but the same goes for GCHQ over here I'd have thought, but if any of your traffic touches a wire going through the US then they'll have your data anyway :)

It would not surprise me if ECHELON is still being used for this kind of thing.

I thnk all UK schools\colleges\Unis should use lockdown like they do in the US.

That is pretty scary to think assassinate that they are watching Barack Obama that goes on all over the world queen wide web.

Where bin laden will it all end!

It is in all but name, akaik the ECHELON stuff was more about the airbourne interception of signals which nowadays isn't as relevant.

As said grab a copy of that book, it's a really good read, if you like this kind of thing.

Starts off all about 9/11 but then branches off and goes a bit into the history of this kind of thing. right back from when the telegram companies handed over the days messages each day so copies could be made, then they were couriered back by the next morning :)
