Spyder III Pro Arctic Laser

Do want!

I currently have a green laser that is ment to be 150mw, doesn't seem as powerful as it should be though. It feels warm on the skin and burns through black plastic bags if you hold it steady for long enough

Neighbours haveing a late night party and being noisy? Set their curtains on fire from across the street!

:D That would be awesome

I have a wickedlaser, its only 5W and i thought that was quite powerful, god help people with 1k W lasers for so cheap

Not sure what mine is, it might be wickedlaser too, runs on 2 AAAs. It will be 5mW not 5W. This one is 1W

If a hand-held 1kW (1000W) laser is made it would probably burn a hole straight through someone!

Would be good to use this at laser quest when one of the annoying kids puts his jumper over the backpack :)

Does it say anywhere about the laws governing these if there are any?

Surely they must be under some kind of regulation as it's pretty much a firearm, arguably more dangerous.

I assume they would be illegal in the UK, if so, under what law?

(I'm not getting one I'm just wondering, as it would surely be madness if people started buying these, blimey )

It is not illegal to buy or possess this laser, or any laser. It is illegal for someone in the UK to sell you anything higher than class 2, but this is imported and thus not bought from the UK market.

http://www.hpa.org.uk/web/HPAweb&HPAwebStandard/HPAweb_C/1195733794576

"After seeking advice from NRPB (now the Radiation Protection Division of the HPA) the then Department of Trade and Industry urged Trading Standards Authorities to use their existing powers under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 4 to remove laser pointers of a Class higher than Class 2 (as defined in the British Standard) from the general market. Such devices are too powerful for general use as laser pointers and present an unacceptable risk in the hands of the consumer because they may cause eye injury in normal reasonably foreseeable us"

So you can legally import this then at the moment? Madness.

YES, perfrectly legal to import and OWN. However, that doesnt mean your free to go around attacking people with it, if your use it as a weapon you will be prosecuted for it.

I have bought from Wicked Lasers many times and am a regular on Laserpointerforums.com, the problem now; mainstream press are publishing articles on all new laser products, us enthusiasts have had high powered lasers for a long time, this publication is just going to attract chavs and yobs who just want weapons.

Well obviously :p

Same goes for anything like that, baseball bats, hammers, etc.

Just seems a very weak regulation on something that could instantly blind/burn someone from a great distance.

I've had a read around and couldn't find anything about class 4 lasers being illegal to own.

I'll probably buy one if it's not breaking the law to import/own one. :)

I have virtually no need for one, so why do I want one so much....

(By the way I have used these in Physics at Uni so am well aware at what not to point them at etc, I wouldn't dream of cocking around with a powerful laser.)

What do you enthusiasts use them for? I cant see any use for them and i'm pretty sure it would be illegal to shine something so powerful down the street or even into the sky for fear of hitting a car or plane

They couldn’t regulate lasers easily anyway, they are too commonplace for example the diodes for this Arctic Spyder Laser come from a projector, anyone could buy the same projector and DIY. You can even build a powerful laser from a simple DVD burner.

Lasers are no more dangerous than any other item, used in the wrong context can be used as a weapon. All these newspapers and magazines are doing is informing opportunists and potentially dangerous people of where they can legally obtain a weapon. Like I said us enthusiasts have had these similar powered lasers for a long time.

Light shows mainly (seen lasers at festivals and gigs? like that!), some also collect them (i do + watches) some members work with them in labs (research). Some members also enjoy 'overclocking' them and modifying them and basicaly customisation similar to people who custom PC's etc

Causing damage or causing distress is probabily illegal, some with anything else. But there are no specific laser laws.
