Hey guys so it's starting to get pretty hot now and for a change this year i feel like getting myself a mountain bike or a bmx to ride to work! Budget is between £150 - £300, but obviously the cheaper the better :p

Would also like to purchase online and get it delivered so any help welcomed :)

I should probably actually give an input while I'm here, unless you plan on using the bmx for bmx style riding (parks, dirt jumps etc), which from your first post it doesn't sound like it, I'd go for a mountain bike.

If you can get to a decathlon, I can't praise their bikes enough. I've had a standard rockrider something or other for a few years and not had any problems, very solid and quite light. I also have a giant something or other from halfords, gears are always screwing about, and it's heavy. Both were around £200.

bmx is not that bad for riding.. and depends on how tall you are you need the frame size that fits too.. but bmx is not for riding to work.. id say stick with mtb :) even tho i use my bmx for both riding around london and dirt/skate parks etc... but then again for 150 you wont get anything good.. for 300 you might get something decent.. still get MTb.

Another vote for a Decathlon here. My g/f has the Rockrider 6.3 full sus, £300 - and its been excellent, no problems, thoroughly reliable.

My Halfrauds turd of a Carrera Vulcan on the other hand, cost me £240 in a sale, and has been back 6 times with brake issues. Recently I've found that the rear brake calliper is bent / deformed, and is barely pressing any brake pad material onto the disc - so effectively no back brake :(

Get a Decathlon, its worth the drive!

Midget - it's because the bike is small and hard for us normal folk to pedal around on it.

This - but dont get a "Mountain bike" just buy something from Halfords, like a Carerra Subway.

you sound like a MTB racist lol xDD you can get a longer frame for bmx which then allows you to pedal easy.. if you tried one of the "argos" bmx'es for 50 quid with 20" frame yes you will be hitting your knees in the bars a lot.. but if you get a proper frame 21.25" you won't have problem ;)

You'll still be riding standing up, and wasting tonnes of energy in your pedalling.

get a bmx

I have both and the bmx is much better for riding about,
simple, smaller, less attractive to getting nicked, smoother tyres, will make you a lot fitter because you wont pussy out and switch gears down when you go uphill, also you can hop curbs a lot easier

mtb wastes plenty of energy on suspension and knobbly tyres

im 6'3" by the way and 28

where this energy dissapearing too like ? it cant just vanish. if the gear ratios are the same (taking the wheels into consideration too ) then its just as efficient apart from the standing up part. but for a mile on the flat who cares its nothing.

for a similar 1.5 mile ride to work i used to choose my bmx over mtb every time . basically just sprinted for 10/20 metres then free wheeled for a good few hundred. took hardly any effort and put a bit of fun into the usually horrible ride home.

anyway as for the OP unless your used to BMXs then id probably just get a big singlespeed bike (which wherent common back when i used to choose a bmx to ride on...) something like the mongoose maurice would be ideal for such a ride

not a mtb though. totally unnecessary
