I must have wired one of my usb ports up wrong cause i plugged my usb 2.0 120 gig hdd into it and the light did not come on. Then i unplugged it and put it in the usb ports on the back of the desktop pc, power light on drive comes on but windows says device is not recognised and fails to appear in windows 7. I have tried the drive in my laptop too and same problem. The drive is spinnign up and power light is on but its not recognised anymore. Any ideas on how to rescue my hdd

it is one which i had in my old laptop a seagate 2.5" 120 gig which i put into a caddy. I use it like a back up device, it has no OS on it although it does have some of my files on which i want to get off there

Do you mean you plugged the internal USB cable into the wrong mobo header? Or have you created your own port and literally wired it wrong?

Only asking as the mobo headers are keyed to stop this kind of thing (although I seem to remember that firewire headers and USB headers are not uniquely keyed and you can fry things...)

yes i have 2 usb ports on the front of the machine I have stuck the wires where it says but it must b wrong cause it blew the usb controller on the external hdd. I think i will just disconnect them so i don't forget there faulty and blow something else lol
