Valve has a surprise for us..

Good post. :)
I'd rather know a little about a game and have it blow my mind when it comes out, than be told everything about it and have it bigged up before hand only to be disapointed.

That said... some confirmation that Ep/HL 3 is actually coming out would be nice. :p

I totally agree. I don't want to know anything about it at all (I never watch film or game trailers either), but a simple update telling us that it's being made and might be coming out within the next 3 years would honestly make me happy. That's what I meant by a brief progress update.

From what I can see, Valve are still making top-notch games for the PC first and foremost, and THEN, porting from PC to console. And to be fair, quite poorly to console compared to it's PC counterpart. Valve are, and always will be a PC developer at heart.

I agreeee :)

Couldn't of put it better myself.

Comments like this make me laugh so hard...

pc gamers made valve in the early years , now the pc gamer is beeing shafted

This is called greedy. a top pc company starts f*ing it's fans.

Stupid Valve.

What difference does the platform make? Why weren't you going OMG steam on mac?!?! WTFHAX - vale are shaft1ng pc gamers!!!!! This PS3 announcement doesn't seem any different (when you think about it) to valve releasing games for the mac. I'd be willing to bet my house that there are fans of valve games from the consoles.

I'm trying to find the article I read (my google foo is on a break tonight) about this this but around the time of the release of steam for mac I read that Valve have been transitioning their workflow for a while. Apparently they now have a workflow, for the source engine, where they can "code once" and then build for each of the different platforms automatically, without too much additional effort. (PC, Mac, 360, and now PS3 it seems - linux has also been talked about across the internet).

It's probably not as easy as I am making it sound, but it has more than likely made the porting process much less painful that it was when Gabe initially game out with his PS3 comments. Not only does this benefit all gamers (all future source based games on all platforms within reasonable release times - no ridiculous "porting" waits like GTA4), it's also a major bonus for source engine licensees. This new workflow makes it easier for them to now port their new games to every platform, meaning more people can buy and enjoy their games.

This thread sums up the pc market, tired and waiting for something new for one platform and about £100m development costs while everyone downloads illegally, get with the program and go console, its the future.

No money in pc gaming because all the money is spent on, RAM/CPU/HDD/GPU/PSU etc. etc.

Some people are taking what "El Chubbo" said out of context.

He said that Portal 2 on the PS3 will be the best on consoles because the PS3 will now be compatible with steamworks and capable od receiving all the updates and patches through the steam cloud. So in other words, if you bought it on a 360 then you just won't get the updates/patches as autonomous as a system connected to the steam cloud.

Jeez, some people just hear want they want to hear.... marking the death of PC gaming... really!!

Some people make me laugh, not sure if they themselves know why they are upset. You act like Valve owes you a beer or something and has given it to someone else, or you have some sort of lifelong entitlement to the company because you saved them from going bust. Valve owes you **** all. They make games, you like the look of them so you buy them, or you don't, simples!

What a crappy surprise, i'm not bothered about Portal 2 coming out on PS3 but is it a PS3 exclusive? That would be a bit pants.

Meh Portal and console related surprise is the biggest anti climax gaming related announcement in the history of gaming

This a good point, anybody who has tried TF2 on the xbox is only playing 1/3rd of the game, they've probably released more "game" since the actual release date!

Seriously?

Have actually heard anything about the announcement, or just hear that "Portal 2" and "PS3" were in some kind of announcement together and jumped to that conclusion?

There have been far greater ones.

You seem very irate in this thread, maybe take a deep breath and chill out a little, its just the internets.

PS3 and Portal news means I grow some CBA for checking myself so I asked in this thread, if I get a reply I get a reply if I dont I dont, PS3 and Portal dont interest me at all but the surprise fail does, a little bit.

The only thing I dislike about Valve turning multi-platform is that they've created this awful, awful lobby system that they use in L4D2 which they must have done to make it easier to port to a console. Words can not express how much I hate it.

I'm plenty relaxed mate, do I require some form of smilie to convey this? :chillax:

The threads pretty boring now. People raging on and on about how Valve have arse raped their fanbase all of a sudden, and are now up there with 3D realms in failure, just because they announced that they're doing something they've always done.

I'm sure by the time Portal 2 is actually out, nobody here that's raging will even remember, and will still buy it. Maybe they just need to start a "Boycott Portal 2" group and get it out of their systems.

The internet is funny.

Valve have the most successful gaming digital distribution model in the world, they are the gatekeepers. They earn royalties on all the games on the platform, they pay no royalties on their own releases. They release some of the most critically acclaimed games in the history of gaming, and still are doing. They are one of the few developers that still believe in free DLC and are making it work for them. No Valve console port has ever been better than the PC equivalent.

Then they make a PS3 port and therefore must be forgetting their PC heritage, they are throwing it all away. Oh us poor PC gamers. They have been supporting consoles for ages now, one more isn't going to change anything.

As for the surprise, what exactly did we expect from a Portal themed surprise?

So some PC owners (ie me too) are crying 'cause a game that's old on the PC is now being released on the PS3?

I'm more angry that they said it was a surprise - this is a more "also in the news" story.
