Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online

Best get all the other things I want to do in life done before this comes out then.

Any idea of a release date for this?

Bit worried everyone will want to be spare marines.

Wow I am really impressed with that, I thought MMORPG's are required to have bad graphics by design. Whats going on? :P

hehe this looks awesome. Im currently playing WAR and its fairly decent but i really want a 40k universe one. I just hope they can do it justice.

Looks heavily Vehicle based... I wonder if it will be a traditional MMO or more like a Planetside MMOFPS... Ill keep my eye on this for sure.

Those little metal models i played with as a 13 year old kid have come along way.

Damn, looks like a boring 'standard model' MMORPG to me. A 40k mmo should be genre defining, not grinding imperial guard npc mobs for a pointless 'quest' :(

Er...because it's got graphics and sound and stuff? Because there's not much else there to give you a clue.

At least its got 3+ sides to it (i hope)

Website seems to suggest multiple factions but only two sides. Which I think is a mistake, you really need three sides as it makes a better dynamic. I just really hope they do not have multi faction grouping, considering the xenophobic nature of the background material. It also seems that they have picked possibly the worst Marine Chapter as far as cross species play and as far as character variety, Black Templars are about as xenophobic and anti psyker as they come. So no Librarians.

Apart from numerous computer games over the years my experience of the 40K universe comes from the (mostly) excellent Horus Heresy novels, so I'll have to see how I take to things set in this time frame. Perhaps I should try some of the other novels to get in to the mood?

Anyway, after the mess up of Warhammer, I'm hoping this one will work. There will be no hope for us if this bombs and Warcraft remains the daddy.

"For teh Emperor!" and all that. ;)

The Horus heresy novels are the exception, to be honest. I'd recommend the following :

Gaunt's Ghosts novels (imperial guard, much more down to earth than the super human space marines)
Eisenhorn novels (imperial inquisitor, shows the civil side of the imperium, away from the front lines, cracking books too)
And for straightforward space marine stuff, The Space Wolves trilogy and The Blood Ravens trilogy (based on dawn of war, but really, really well written, and the blood ravens aren't your usual closed minded stuck up marines :))

Considering this is WH40K.. I am considerably uninspired by that video..

I hope we get some better details soon as has been said, this isn't looking deserved of the IP.. it looks very generic.

It appears Vigil are owned by THQ and developed Darksiders which has 8.9 on ign on 360.. so they aren't completely useless..

Unless you're talking about things that are not possible in this universe currently, what are these genre defining ideas? There are things that are a constant in an MMO, doing "missions/quests" is one, doubt it'll go away in my life time :p

If it isn't doing quests, then what.

UO was an MMO which didnt have missions/quests 13 years ago, so technically its already gone away in your life time :D

Meh.
There hasn't been a good MMORPG since UO.
Every game since has been a quest doing race to the highest level.

When I created my Blacksmith in UO it took around 6 months for him to reach Grandmaster.
Honestly probably my happiest six months in an MMORPG.

I actually uttered the words OH MY GOD aloud when watching this. Everything from the tech priest, cultists and orcs to the titan and that dreadnought burning some dudes.

Sudden urge to re-read the Eisenhorn books. Or finally pick up Horus Heresy, the space marine books I've read so far have been poo though :(

MULTI-QUOTE OF DOOM

Reminds me of WoW way too much.

There wasn't anything in the way of gameplay design in that vid so I'm assuming you meant aesthetics?

Well it did have an orc in it.

Ohhh, for ***** sake it looks nothing like WoW  It's very hard to tell what it really looks like since most of it is just pre rendered sequences.

It seems if I took a dump and called it an mmo someone would say it looks like WoW these days

Unlike most comparisons, that one would be accurate. Oh!

Nah man, Inquisitors are way cooler  That and/or Tech Priest would be an ace class to play. Games Workshop fans all like something different too, as long as it's to scale and paint sticks to it :p After looking at the paint-jobs my little brother did on his Tyrannid army I'd say his missed his calling as an artist and took up nerdism instead.

If it isn't doing quests, then what.

Indeed. Quests/missions are known IRL as jobs, tasks, objectives, and "stuff I need to do." Not much escaping that is there?

Clever game mechanics can hide it, I will however ragequit the moment I'm tasked with retrieving x number of wolf pelts.

Ah damn they screwed it up :(

Warhammer 40K would have been freaking god damn awesome as a modern day Planetside. This was a prime candidate for a MMOFPS - a real one (not fake like Huxley or Global Agenda).

A god damn honest massive multiplayer online first person shooter, spanning star systems, races, battle armour, dreadnaughts, titans....

But no, they wanted their own FREAKING WoW cash cow... so lets make it like WoW... how god damn original. That video looked like a reskinned WAR (although I realise it is a different studio)...

..... epic disappointment.
