Best Laptop for £550

Maybe try putting more effort into your opening post next time :p

What exactly are your requirements, do you need blu ray, big screen or good graphics card for gaming? What will you be using it for?

Just something that can do stuff without struggling and freezing. No need for blu ray, decent graphics is fine, not for gaming at all. Browsing the web/chatting and the usual. It needs to be decently powerful.

Thanks

Well if it's not for gaming at all, then I'm guessing an integrated graphics card would be fine? In that case you just need something with a decent CPU (i3/i5) and 4GB of RAM which is quite a few laptops at that price range. Check out Samsung R580 (although styling mat put some off) or Dell Studio 15 series. Samsung is a prebuild so can't modify it but Dell would allow for much more customisation. Also plenty of Acers to research at that price although do some research into the after sales support as it doesn't have the best reputation. HP Pavilion DV6 series also worth checking out.

Okay thanks very much.

Okay so I've decided to go with this laptop 'HP G62-104SA Laptop'.

Specs:

(Intel Core i3, 2GB 250GB, 15.6" Screen, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
2GB DDR3 RAM 1066MHZ
2.5" SATA 7200rpm with 12MB Cache
Processor Intel® Core™ i3
Processor Bus in Mhz 1066
Processor Cache 3
Processor Model Number 330M
Processor Speed in GHz 2.3

Is 2gb of ddr3 1066mhz enough to run win 7 smoothly?

Dell aren't too great in terms of customisation in all honesty; HP have made some awesome models lately, as suggested the DV6 range. You could also check out Compaq, a subsidisary of HP.

Seems decent value for money especially for i3. I would upgrade the RAM to 4GB but that shouldn't cost that much, always bargains on MM here. Has nice little touches like web cam too so perfect for the "web/chatting" that you asked for.

Haha, if only I could use MM :D, in this case since the laptop will be used only for msn, webcam, facebook and general browsing is there any need to up the ram. Which component is more essential when it comes down to this RAM, or CPU and is the ram at 2gb sufficient enough to do those things smoothly.

Frankly Windows 7 is pretty good with resources, I have an old tablet PC with it on that has 1GB of RAM and browsing on that is smooth. 2GB should be sufficient for your needs :)
