Moved to BT

but the internet connection will run down the bt line and ive been told my line can only hold 6meg

That's with ADSL Max...

LLU you'll most probably see double the speed.

Post your router stats.

Be* and O2 offer the best speeds all day, aswell as low pings and no FUP for torrenting...

I do believe that answers your questions?

LLU has nothing to do with speed. If BT have told him 6mbit connection on an ADSL2+ is what is expected, then I wouldn't expect much more.

Scratch that, im getting my brain muddled with it all lol, more sleep less beer.

Still the speeds/ping and reliability out weigh BT by miles! :P

You will most probably get same speeds with Be*/O2, maybe more with a few tweaks. O2/Be* don't throttle your downloads and give low pings aswell as good excellent customer service.

You will be miles happier and better off with them.

BE What you'll need

* A BT phone line

* A device capable of communicating via TCP/IP (like a Windows PC, Mac, iPhone or Xbox with Live)

* A device with an Ethernet port for a wire connection to the BE Box

* An 802.11b or 802.11g compatible network adapter for wireless connection to the BE Box

* Windows 98SE / Mac OS 8.6 or higher

whats meant by a device with an Ethernet port for a wire connection to the BE Box.

do they supply you with a router / modem or do you have to buy one?

The ethernet port is the connection that is required in order for your PC to connect to the router like you are now, unless you go wireless.

They also supply you with their own modem/router but also support 3rd party ones.

BE said i will be looking around 7meg in my area they 1meg more than bt. am i best of going with value because it offers 8meg and pro is 24meg but i will never get it so is it a waste of money?

Depends, their value pack doesn't offer the tweaking panel or fastpath.

Good thing though is that you can change between packages just by sending a ticket to their staff.

I would suggest value first, then unlimited if you want fastpath.

The OP made me cry inside.
I was with BT broadband about 3 yers ago, the HUB did its job but felt a bit cheap.

The conection was a bit tempramental, would constantly loose connection in the evenings (which was a massive pain when raiding) and would have to spend about 10mins reconnecting. speeds werent ever close to what i "shoud be able to get" but that isnt nessecerilly BT's fault.

Service was attrocious, spent 6 months fighting with BT to get back over £100 after being over charged again and again then finally cancelled the broadband contract.

now i only allow BT to provide me a landline so i can run Be* (which is fantastic, always fast and happy to help and never been told off for downloading too much)

*also got to point out that when i moved house last year I descided to trust BT again and set up a direct debit to pay my landline bill but BT took 3 consecutive monthly payments of £95, I quickly took away that little bit of responsibilty as they clearly could not be trusted and when the credit runs out on my account will start paying them again by card only.

please look elsewhere for a broadband provider

You need to get the upto 24meg packages to get ADSL2+ and therefore the faster speeds.

  • All BT broadband packages have download limits and traffic shaping.
It's impossible to recommend BT's 'unlimited' (option 3) broadband product given the lack of clear information on the service limits. As an example, their broadband FUP states that the unlimited nature of the option 3 package is subject to a network management policy which does not define the term "heavy user".

They also heavily throttle torrent traffic, at least between the hours of 16:00-00:00 weekdays and 09:00-00:00 weekends. Their FUP states that these ranges can be expanded on a per-day basis as they see fit.

  • None of the current BE broadband packages have a download limit or traffic shaping.
Your Compare Broadband link is showing outdated information for the 'value' option.
  • All of BE's current packages are ADSL2+.
  • All of BE's current packages allow DSLAM profile adjustment, either via the member centre profile adjuster, ticketing system, telephoning customer services (free), members' forum or IRC channel. The 'unlimited' and 'pro' accounts give you the option to disable downstream interleaving.
If BE think you're likely to achieve 7 Mbps then this may allow you to get the most out of their 'value' account. If you happen to hit 8 Mbps you could request a short trial with the hard limit removed; this will let you gauge how much more is possible before choosing whether to pay a higher subscription for the 'unlimited' or 'pro' packages.

If you're more concerned with the price of your telephone calls then you will have to weigh up some further options.
