How to be polite to old busy bodies?

Hey guys,

Just a question really, do you keep your cool with old busy bodies? The reason why I ask is I've just had an one have a go at me for brushing the dog along the back lane where I live, telling me I was a disgrace as I left the dogs hair in the bushes.

Now this wouldn't normally bother me but since I've been a kid both me and my dad have taken turns in removing the undercoat of our dogs (and more recently with me Max) at the same spot as its a back lane (about 20m away from my front door) with a nice seat and is no ones property, the women came running out of her house shouting at me telling me I was a disgrace to leave my dogs hairs in the back lane and that she had taken my picture and was going to ring the police. Again I was very polite and made light of the fact the police wouldn't do a thing as it is not a criminal matter and carried on with the dog.

Her last words were "Why don't you do it next to your house" and some expletives which caused me to tell her to ****** off as I live closer to where it happened than she did and the fact I have lived there for 26yrs!

Anyway it annoyed me enough to ask on here if anyone would have been totally coarse with her or would people be too polite?

How much hair are we talking?

If it's handfuls then the decent thing would probably be to take it with you and dispose of it.

I tend to deal with such situations with a look of incredulity rather than getting annoyed and ending up shouting at each other - it tends to end in you being left alone earlier for a start.

I'd have just give her a death stare until my dog needed to poo. Then flung it in her face with an orange spade.

I'm jumping on the do it on your own property bandwagon. It is a very peculiar thing to do outside.

So you're saying the woman had a point then?

Still, it's only a bit of hair and it will blow away in the wind. These kind of people don't have anything better to do with their time, it was probably the highlight of her day.

Good few handfulls, when growing up my dad always used to say that when we brushed the dog it was always nesting season so the birds around here (seaguls,crows,pidgeons etc) all steal it within a day or two anyway.

On a serious note, could you not do it in a small room in your house then get the vac out?

I do hate people like that with nothing better to do, but I'd probably not do it outdoors to start with.

Yes, I brush the dog every week, it's not exactly hard :confused:

Not a country lane, a back alley which is one the way from my house to the local park.

It might be as well to say something along the lines of "I see, I'll try to remember for next time" - I'd guess you have no intention of doing anything differently but it might mollify the lady a little just now.

I'd probably be polite to someone enquiring if I could but dog hair is biodegradeable so provided you aren't just scattering it on her grounds then I don't really see her problem. It might look a bit messy for a short period but it will either be blown away/used for nesting materials/composted into the soil rapidly enough to render it a triviality.
