The EA week on Steam

I'm at a loss to why so many of you lot slate RA3, I found it a fun game to play, Uprising is quite frankly Elfen Lied/C&C which I found kinda cool. Ok, they didn't do an original story but sticking it in there was interesting.

The secondary functions added some variety to simple "attack move" fighting.

Can you still get Uprising if you have a disk copy of RA3?

I hope so!! I have the disc version of RA3 and have just bought the Uprising. It doesnt mention anywhere that you need to have the original RA3 at all?

Also bought Bad Company 2 yesterday. Hope I enjoy it.

RA3 Uprising is meant to be standalone apparently.

I say apparently, because I bought it last night but it doesn't work for me :p The splash screen comes up for five seconds then disappears, and nothing happens :/

So far theyre not exactly giving away the games. You can get retail versions of most of the games that have been on offer for a lot less than steam are charging. Not the bargains that have been included on the previous sales.

If you've followed Steam for a long time then you'll know that not all sales have large percentage discounts, especially for newer games. Buying on Steam isn't always just about the price but the additional convenience.

What convenience are you speaking of?

With my slow interwebs it's more convenient to get the DVD version.

If you have say 30 games on Steam, versus having them on retail disc, and then you reinstall Windows - Steam is infinitely more convenient ;)

It's easily the best digital distribution system for the PC.

Automatic updates, Steam Cloud, and Steam works.

It's also nice to have all my games installed in the same place, and to know that I can just copy my steam folder to another PC and know they'll work without having to reinstall.

I've not got a fast connection, but Steam is far better than having hundreds boxes cluttering up the place. Download once, keep forever.

I'll try installing it when I get home from work tonight and let you know if it installs for me.

BTW if you do have a problems how easy/hard is it to get a refund if something doesnt work?

Cheers

Exactly this - I've brought second copies of games on Steam before - just so that I can have all my games in one place!

Whenever I do a full reinstall of Windows (Which I like to do occasionally) - I won't have to even touch my Steam folder as it's on my other hard drive :)

Ive bought a couple of second copies on steam after losing the original disk. DeusX and Serious Sam.

Dont have a CD rom drive connected to my computer at the moment.

Very hard to impossible, in my experience. I'll be interested to know how you get on with the game :)

I tried rebooting but it still didn't work. Every other game I have works fine, and I have pretty mainstream hardware. I have Windows 7 on a dual boot so I'll try playing it from that later.

You are all missing out on having several lovely drawers packed with lines of boxes dating back to the early 90s in alphabetical order. Just looking at my many pc games in nice neat rows arranged from A-Z gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

I've warmed to Steam a lot over the past few years and now I try to buy there if possible.

One thing that does worry me is Steam's policy of "don't care" if they mistakenly nuke your entire games collection.

I'm not, that's the problem. I ran out of space a long time ago. :(

Steam is a saviour. :D

What's that then?

Well they have the T&Cs all stitched up so that they can remove your account with no warning for no reason.

Sure, it's hardly ever going to happen, but it's a lot of money to put in control of a company with no appeals process.
