Long Haul flight tips...

Pray you have enough legroom.
I suffer on flights as I'm 6'6" and technically borderline whether I need to pay (grr... bloody discrimination) to upgrade to extra legroom. My knees usually won't fit in the seat properly and be bent at odd angles so even short haul gets very uncomfortable.
Dunno if you have the same problem but it's a damn nightmare for me.

Motion sickness patch, get one from you doctor just incase, I didn't suffer from travel sickness til I flew to the us, needless to say after a couple of hours I wanted to chuck myself off the plane. I was going out of my mind by the end of the flight.

Aside from that take a long book or two, an mp3 player, laptop maybe. Or you challenge to tag all the airline stuardesses (and if you have one, female pilot) in the space of the flight. It's a story to tell the lads aint it :D

which airline is the more comfortable economy class flying out to Hong Kong/Taiwan do you reckon?

Cathay Pacific? Singapore Airlines? in a B777 ?

Is it worthwhile paying an extra 400 or so to go business class?

I was planning on not sleeping for a few days and then sleeping for around 10 hours on the plane. Would still get medication from doc as uhhh im not a good flyer :D

Dont fly till next year tho.

Also, after eating hot meals, DO NOT HAVE A COOL/COLD DRINK!! Dont do it ever infact, let alone during a flight. The coolness cuases any lipids/ fatty acids to coagulate and stick onto the epithelium, which can cause lots of issues!

What?

I've been doing this since I was a baby with ice cold coke. In fact, I did it twice today. Never had any "issues" whatsoever.

I fly a fair bit, often long haul - you kind of get used to it really.

I always try and make sure I'm knackered when I got on the plane. It helps if you can line this up with the target time zone too - I'll often stay up all night before a long haul flight.

Be careful where you sit. Window seats are great but only for a tiny part of the flight. Taking off & landing. For the rest they're just a pain in the backside.

Personally I find the best place to sit is in the isle. If you can't turn left when you get on the plane ;) then the most comfortable place to sit is in my opinion either over or just behind the wings.

If you're too far toward the rear the slightest bit of turbulence is worse - it just seems bouncier at the back.

Have a plan when you get on the plane too - I find this helps. I usually have my laptop to hand (now my iPad of course :D) for movies etc.

The first few long haul sessions are the worse but you do get used to them.

Incidentally, flying HOME long haul always to me seems significantly harder than flying to somewhere cool.

Who you flying with by the way? If it's Virgin and you can afford it up to Premium Economy - it makes a world of difference on long haul.

Sorry missed this bit:

Cathay Pacific? Singapore Airlines? in a B777 ?

Both great airlines in my opinion. Bus class on Singapore is fantastic if you can swing that. Cathay's is great too, just not quite as great as Singapore's BC.

Make sure your get a cup noodle in the middle of the night, they will make you one.

If business class is only another £400 return then it's definitely worth it.
Singapore Business Class is absolutely brilliant, without a doubt one of the best in the world.

I'd argue it's worth it for the lounge access too.
The lounge in Singapore is excellent with half decent food, internet and showers.
Having a shower is great, especially if you're connecting onto a day flight.

United are quite good now with their flat seats up front, certainly one of the better carriers to take across the Atlantic.

What are United like bus class? Although the flights are operated by Air Canada so it may be their planes...?

I will in future, if you pay for the seat :)

This. ;)

Been on a couple of short haul business class flights and they weren't that much better tbh. I can see international flights being different though.

Both are excellent airlines. Singapore has the best onboard entertainment with power for your laptop and USB input to plug your own media in. Brilliant. Cathay has a better seat pitch.

Absolutely but check it really is business class and not premium economy, I'd expect business long haul to cost a damn sight more than just 400 quid extra!

£400 more for business class? If that is for the entire journey, snap their hand off!

I fly L/H quite a bit, can't really suggest anything apart from saying it's no different to being sat in a coach or something really so apply the same logic. Did Jo'burg last week (11 hrs) and got Dubai the week after next. :( At least I might get a 'go' in an A380 :D

Depends who you fly with. I was very careful and picked the airline with the best seat pitch - Malaysia Airlines with a 34" pitch. It was fine.

Sadly my next long haul has a 32" pitch :(

AirAsia? I didn't find it too uncomfortable to be fair, can't complain especially for the price I paid at the time, expensive now.

Can't believe no one has mentioned the obvious, flying west sleep as much as you like can. Flying east try to stay awake as much as possible.

Also just maybe my own personal tip which has worked for some of my mates which have been out to see me try and get a flight which lands before midday then , its just a simple task of doing keeping busy at your destination until a reasonable time at night. Then give into the sleep that you will be craving!

I find both tips work really well and never suffered from jet lag really hope this helps
