If I was just doing LA these would be no question :)

Im doing the LA to LV and Grand Canyon drive this year, i guess by the time i get back it will be rather too late :p

I have always hoped to get something decent when I go but the only time I got a Mustang V6 I thought it was terrible. Slow, noisy and the handing was vague at best.

In the desert a convertible will be worthless, you'll be burnt within an hour, plus they usually have a nice black top that'll get really hot.

The other thing is unless you order something very specific there's no guarantee you'll get the model you want when you get there. Personally I find driving in the US a bit joyless, every road is straight and slow so you might as well get an American barge and enjoy the air con.

Yet another ballache; the UK based renters like Car Hire 3000 are great because you get all the insurance you need as a UK driver. The downside is you can't reserve anything special.

So my advice book something cheap but decent (full size) with Carhire 3000 or Usrentacar and ask them what they have that's interesting in stock when you get to LAX and pay any upgrade charges. You're in with a good chance doing this as at LAX they usually have a lot of cars in stock.

Our road trip in may covered: LA -> Willaims -> GC -> Vegas -> Lake Tahoe -> Napa -> San Fran -> Big Sur -> LA. That was about 2500 miles all in.

We rented a 3.5l V6 Ford Flex from Hertz for 436 quid (3 weeks). Tbh with the wind and dust inplaces (DeathValley) we didn't miss having a convertible at all. We figured a 4x4 would be handy for the national parks.

The Flex was very spacious and comfotable, but it's def not the best drive going. All in all we were very impressed with it, it put up with a lot of abuse and never caused us concern. It handled the long commutes and town driving without issue and gave us 25mpg (american) on a run.

Hertz wawnted a lot of money for the next size up (Lincoln Navigator) so we didn't see the point.

Oh and if you get bored driving across Death Valley (and you will), tune into Playboy radio - very bizarre but the miles flew past :D

Had a V6 mustang for a week, had incredibly soft suspension but didn't feel comfortable and a pretty lethargic engine.

Fine for cruising, but don't expect any fun out of it. My vote goes for the 300c/Dodge Charger, super smooth on the highway and look the part in CA.

This sort of comment isn't much use unless you tell me where I can hire one for my budget, because the 5.7 is an incredible rare rental car and most are V6's.

ah would have thought the V8 would be easyer to come by in the USA.
