Well, I recently applied for a Access course to computing to get me into Computer Engineering at Reading uni.

I have my Access interview on the 30th.

Main reason for coming out of full time work is simply because as much as I love being a IT field engineer. I just can't see me going any further. I want to get involved in computer engineering, development and research. a lot more indepth and real goals within the career.

I am personally very excited about the interview, it is the first step of many and I hope it goes well :D

Anyone on here go to Reading uni?

Oh, before you ask why I chose Reading as I live in Reading. My mate did the exact same Uni course and loved it, he lived in Reading. Also, financial situation, a part time job will pay for my DD's, such as phone bill, motorbike insurance, motorbike running costs, loan payment from years ago and bits and bobs. My old dear (put your hands together for this) has offered to pay for all my courses straight up. Meaning I don't have to pay a penny, and means I can live with her saving me accomodation costs.

Although I think I might stay in halls as my sis is about to have a baby (again, hands together!) so don't want to be around a screaming baby whilst working!

Anyways, just thought I would post as I am dead excited about this new branch in my life just about to start.:D

So you are already an engineer before getting a degree? How does that work?

2 totally different things mate, I worked my way into a field engineer from nothing but personal experience and learning on the job.

Going into computer engineering which branches off to so many other things opens up a lot of other career paths that were never going to be open to me if I had not of studied it.

Plus, it's pretty much my last chance to get an education to be proud of and I would rather take the chance than let it pass and regret it in 20 years time when I am still nothing more than a field engineer raking in a below average salary.

No it's not but as moses said those who know don't really care.

Tbh chaps, as long as I get more out of my career, call it what you like.

Anyway, anyone done a similar or the same course, comments?

Have you actually applied to Reading, yet? I presume you'll apply in the next UCAS cycle?

Yea, have my access interview on the 30th so this is still VERY early days. We apply next year during the course i believe. Not sure, will ask in the interview on how the enrolling process works.

But as for now, the only application made is to the access course.

Yeah, well you'll be able to apply through UCAS at any point (but you'll need to be enrolled on the access course so you can put down the qualification you're doing/get references/etc). The deadline for the UCAS application will be January 15th (or very close to that date)... get it in a while before that, though... aim to have it done before the Christmas break.

Will do mate, cheers for the info :)

I will keep the thread updated over the next few months up until a couple of weeks in. That's if I nail this interview :)

Could be handy to others that are interested in Access courses.

Good luck, the considerable cut in salary must be nerve wracking. Out of interest, what age are you now?

Still fairly young, 22.

And yes, been working for a long time in full time employment.

Going to be hard I'm not lieing to my self about that.

I'm 22, as well... it's the age I started this academic year. You don't have to be tied to Reading - have you considered going to other places? I'm 300 miles from home up here in Sheffield!

Great...if you can afford it. If there's a particular university that offers a better programme and more for the fees then fair enough otherwise it doesn't make much sense.

Actually, wait, agnes said his mother's offered to help. In that case feel free to ignore my post, probably doesn't apply here.

Well, mainly Reading because it's close to home and my sis will be dealing with a new baby so will need a hand everynow and then, and my mates who have been on the course rate it very highly. So it was a no brainer tbh.
