Intel Pentium 4 (2 CPU's) 3.20Ghz

Hey all,

I'm currently sorted out my Dad's Computer (Deleting unwated software, Defragging etc.) and i opened up "DxDiag" and i am struggling to understand whether this CPU in title is a Single Core, or a Dual Core...

I have read something about Hyperthreading but i do not truely understand what is is doing in relation to the CPU?

Any ideas?

It's probably this CPU - a very good processor back when it was released I might add!

Indeed, if its is branded "Pentium 4", then it is a single core. Any second core that appears is a result of hyperthreading as mentioned above.

The dual cores based on pentium 4 technology are branded as "Pentium D" (not to be confused with "Pentium Dual Core" which is core 2 duo based), these Pentium D chips do have two physical cores, but are also hot and nasty.

Coincidentally, I was just sorting out one of my company's PC today which is using a Pentium 4 3.00GHz. A few days ago when I check the CPU temp, it was like 69C at idle and around 80~90C at load. I opened the case, and found the expected stock Intel CPU cooler, not only that, dust has filled most of the gaps in the heatsink the there are probably barely enough air getting through. I replaced the stock cooler with the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 today, and idle temp dropped to 46~48C :D

I googled a bit out of curiousity, and found the Pentium 4 3.00GHz CPU can overclock to around 3.7GHz. But since it's just an office PC, I ain't bothered...especially not only the two sticks of 1GB are not matching brand and model...they ain't even the same speed :p (the faster RAM is obviously downlocked to match the slower RAM)
 
Just goes to show how hot those cpus were, i recently cleaned a clients pc (of porn and dust) and i had used a Thermaltake big Typhoon on an E8190 @ 3.4Ghz 1.3v and even at that speed and vcore with the heatsink fins absolutely chocked full of dust bunnies it topped out at 67C in intel burntest, now it tops out at 59C :D and that cpu would eat any pentium D alive.
