Hiper type R 580w to run Asus 5850 cu Top?

Thinking of a GPU upgrade from my 4850 to the Asus DirectCu Top.

Will I need to upgrade my PSU?

I very occasionally get random system restarts with no error message when gaming and i'm wondering if the PSU is getting stressed. I've had it a few years now.

Rest of my system is

E6600 OC to 3.1xxxGhz
ARCTIC FREEZER PRO 7
P5W DH DELUXE
ANTEC 900 CASE
4GB OCZ PCS 6400 REAPER
XP 32bit SP3

Both the 5770 and 5850 are excellent cards. I suppose it all depends on what resolution you will be playing at and what level of performance you will be aiming at.

If you have the money for a 5850, I would suggest instead going for a 5770 (1GB) and also buying a Q6600 (G0 version) second-hand for ~£80 and picking up an Upgrade version of Windows 7 (and install the 64 bit version). This will cost around the same as a decent 5850 (like the ASUS DirectCu version) but will give you a much nicer general experience.
 
Where do you live?

Just want to avoid the nuclear fallout! (Had one meself, blew up, luckily only took itself out!)

Can't fault the Coolermaster I've got, well recommended.

That is a bit scary. I've had this one a good couple of years and it's always been fine and i've left my pc on a LOT. Like for weeks at a time.....:eek:

Guess i've been lucky or got a good one but i need to power up my system anyway so i'm thinking this: Antec TruePower New Modular 650W Power Supply maybe.

Wouldn't really want to do this for a few reasons.

I might want to upgrade to an i7 core system at some point in the not so distant future ( i7 920, ASUS P6T etc.) and it makes more sense to get a card that will be worth running on that system.

Also i don't think you can upgrade from xp 32bit to 7 64bit??? so i'd have to get the full version and i wouldn't want to upgrade even if i could, too many potential problems. Best to go for a clean install. Also no point getting a new OS for a system i'll not be sticking with for too much longer.

The gf does not like the upgrade idea though......:rolleyes:
 
Fair enough if you are planning a full upgrade if you need the extra CPU power. However, if you are mainly just gaming, an overclocked Q6600 will not hold you back for quite some time.

As for upgrading from xp 32bit to Windows 7 64 bit, you are quite correct that you can't run the upgrade procedure. However, the upgrade licence does allow you to do a fresh install of windows 7 (64 bit) in this instance fully legally (the upgrade and full version disks both contain the full OS and both can do a clean install), the only difference is that you may be asked for your Win XP license number at some point in the future (which you have). Just make sure you backup all your important stuff.

I myself did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on the laptop I am currently using with an Upgrade version of Win7. Previously it was running XP 32bit - and I have had zero problems since installing it.
 
I have a hiper type r 580w & never had a problem in all the years i have had it . Bin fantastic for me & it's bin left going weeks at a time on my gtx 260 216 ..

Infact i was that inpressed with them when i upgraded my system i got a Hiper type m 880w which i am running now with no problems & is very quite ..

To answer your question m8 yes the hiper 580w will run the 5850 so it's up to you if you want to keep it cheers..
 
I had a hiper type r 580 for ages and did me well.

it ran everything i threw at it no problem but after hearing all the reports of them blowing up i decided not to play roulette with it and risk it taking out something more expensive.

i would recomend going with a Corsair TX the 650w is cheap and decent but id get a modular one and a few more watts if you are going to upgrade.

Mine blew up within 3 months. Luckilly it didnt take out any components.

Swapped it for a Tagan, fine for 3+ years, then an OCZ, fine for 18+ months, and currently a great Tagan BZ1100 :)

The previous Tagan and OCZ never blew up of course :p

Antec, Seasonic, Corsair are all good, but the new OCZ ones arent getting very good reviews.

Right, I think i'll be getting that then.

I dusted inside my pc yesterday and had to detach a few things and ended up refitting one of the dvd rw drives as i took out the wrong one a while back when one started playing up. Anyway, I went to turn it back on and it wouldn't post. Spent 2 hours messing around with it to realise the molex connector for the hdd's was faulty = no power going to them and no hdd active light on the front console. Changed the hiper branded cable for the one that came with my asus p5w dh deluxe and voila! Also tried using the PCI express output for my 4850 that wouldn't work with it last time so i was running it off the molex output with a PCI express adapter (which may explain some of the in game crashes i've been experiencing) and it's decided to work now. Definitely time for the upgrade methinks.

Also I can get 3.2ghz stable now on my E6600 now all the fans and heatsinks are clean and the temps are down 5-6 degrees.
 
My hiper lasted 3 months in the wifes computer and promptly went bang, if khazakstan corner shop made power supplies, hiper would be them -_-
 
my type-r 580 went abit wierd because it would stop and start before post screen comes up, a few weeks later it went completely dead. After many months sat in a cupboard under the stairs, I decided to do a DIY fix and replaced the dodgy caps with high-grade rudycon and its running flawless for about 2 half years.
