Hi all,

What do you think of this set up?

• Case: Antec 902 Ultimate Gaming Case - Black

• Power Supply: Corsair TX 750W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply

• CPU: Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz Overclocked to 4.00GHz

• Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

• Cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler with 2000RPM Sharkoon Silent Eagle 120mm

• RAM: Corsair Dominator Tri Channel 6GB (3x2GB) PC3 - 12800 1600MHz DDR3 C7

• Hard Drive: Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache x2 (Two separate drives)

• Graphics Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5

• Sound: 7.1 Channel Sound (On-Board)

• Optical Drive: LG DVD+/-RW SATA Drive

• Cooling: Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent 120mm Fan - 4 Pin PWM x 2 - for the side and middle of the case.

Answers below!!

Thanks.

You could save yourself £45 and go for a 920 and still get the same overclock. Also, have you considered the corsair H50 as a cooler?

Dont know where your planning on putting the extra fan, yes theres a side panel for one but what do you mean by the middle? Am I missing something with my 902 :S

Hi all,

• Cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler with 2000RPM Sharkoon Silent Eagle 120mm

• Cooling: Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent 120mm Fan - 4 Pin PWM x 2 - for the side and middle of the case.

Be careful with putting a fan on the side panel... I can't fit one with a large air cooler fitted!! AND the bracket that would hold it is up against the cooler itself rendering very difficult to put the side panel on...

It's the only problem with the 902 that I didn't know when I bought - the bracket for the side panel fan is right over where the CPU goes and interferes with larger CPU coolers.

(I'm putting pics up later for another thread about a similar problem - I'll link it in when I've posted them).

Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback so far - it has been very useful. I would have replied sooner, but I went out to watch that dreadful England performance last night and I’m still recovering from the shock!

I looked into the difference between the 920 and the 930, and apart from one additional multiplier added and a
higher stock frequency - there doesn’t seem to be much point in spending the additional £45, especially if you overclock it.

Try and get the HX750W, modular PSU's make the cable management so much easier

As for the cooling solution, the Corsair H50 looks a very good option but is there anything else you would suggest to go with it?

Would be my choice for a case at this price range. Use the cash saved to buy a case window when available.

And yes, a modular PSU is a must.

The HDD's you've specced, I have two of them, top drives for the money, fast and quiet.

I hadn’t really thought about the modular option for the PSU - but thanks for the tip and I’ve added that to the build, instead of the TX version.

I suppose it all boils down to personal choice with cases, I think I have made up my mind and I’m going to stick with the 902 case but thanks for the suggestion.

The power is a little ott unless you're thinking of watercooling or crossfire in the future...

Water cooling was something i was considering, because i really need an ultra silent PC - do you think the setup i have put together, is going to be silent enough?

Sorry for the confusion, in the description of the case it states that 2 fans can be added as optional extras, side and middle. Take a look - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-110-AN&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=160

Thanks for the info, I look forward to the pics!

Silent is an absolute. You cant have a "silent enough" setup really. You can get a quiet setup on air, but stock fans or 2000rpm fans will not achieve this. The case is also a bad choice for a silent setup as its very holey so noise will escape out of every side.

What you should be doing if you want nice and quiet is not going for a 4GHz overclock, dropping down to 3.6GHz will give a nice temperature. This really wont affect performance as much as most here would have you believe. Keeping the Prolimatech cooler and adding two quiet, low rpm, high cfm fans to it. Replacing all stock fans on whatever replacement case you go for with quiet ones.

Though I have never used it myself, it may be worth getting acoustic dampening material on the inside of the pannels and fixing a small weight on the inside.

As for the Power supply, Corsair are very good. You do not need modular as people have said here. Should you get it? Sure if you can afford it, its a very nice feature. But it wont effect performance.
Getting a higher rated PSU than you need is a good thing, for multiple reasons. Dont know why people go around saying its overkill, granted a 1200W PSU seems silly to me but running your system of a 750W leaves plenty of safety room, and will keep it quieter.

not a 4Ghz clock? but then his PC will suck at benchmarks! his e-peen will be smaller!

but seriously, there is really very little that will max out a CPU like that for long periods, if you want silence take the lower clocks. you will only really lose out when encoding, and then not by much.

I just gonna copy and paste on of my other post here...

How does this look?

Similar price to the "Ultima Vanquish" Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz @ 4.00GHz Quad Core DDR3 Crossfire Option System (this week only offer at £1266.74, normal price £1301.99), but you get a i7 920 @ 4.00GHz (same speed as i7 930 @ 4.00Ghz because they are the same chip), also you'd be getting a pair of 5850 for Crossfire instead of a single 5870. The CPU cooler would be Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler instead of the Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler with 2000RPM Sharkoon Silent Eagle 120mm. The PSU is cut back from the Corsair TX 750W to Antec TruePower 650W, but it is still more than sufficient for a i7 920 @4.00GHz with Crossfire 5850 system:

Great feedback, What case do you recommend I go for if the 902 is too holey? I want something that is plain and simple but looks good, with enough room to fit an extra gfx card in if I decide to upgrade in the future.

Sorry for the long delay but here's what I mean by the clip hitting the cooler:
I really have to carefully squeeze it on into the gap!
(If I have it on as rear exhaust it doesn't go on at all!)
