Is the gtx 470 in competition with 5850?

In terms of price, the GTX470 competes with the HD5870, but performance wise, the HD5850.

I think nVidia intended for it to compete with the HD5870 (so that they could claim that the GTX480 is ample competition for the HD5970).

You should really have a look at the US market as that's where the retail prices are targeted at.

It goes as follows:

Radeon 5770 - $160
Radeon 5830 - $220

GeForce 465 - $260
Radeon 5850 - $310
GeForce 470 - $330
Radeon 5870 - $400
GeForce 480 - $470
Radeon 5970 - $670
(but you can get it for $50 less)

Trust me, nVidia doesn't give a **** about the UK market and what we are charged for their products.

I'd say nvidia thinks of it as 470 vs. 5870 because with current games due most cards being able to play them which makes avg. fps irrelevant and the 470 beats the 5870 at minimum fps (and can beat it's average with a small overclock)

Nvidia regards the 5870 as direct competition for the 480, reviews show them to be very close in performance in the majority of games, officially released Nvidia performance charts compare the 5870 to the 480.

Officially released Nvidia chart showing heaven performance.

Regarding min FPS...

Really it's the GTX 465 V 5850 I feel.

You can't just bring out a card price it around £70 higher and say they're in competition.

Cards at the same pricepoint or closely priced are in conmpetition.

Raven, how come you do not post the results where the GTX470 beats the HD5850?
Selective is'nt it ?

Have you not seen his sig ;)

You'll never get a completely non biased comment from raven, and he'll always be very selective with any benchmarks he posts I'm afraid.

He is very very anti Nvidia, for what reason I've no idea

You mean metro 2033? heavily optimized nvidia title so really not fair to compare, the 5870 still edges out the 470 in it from the same review, I have posted the results up for you even though I was replying to a post about the 470 having better min FPS than a 5870 not 5850. As for the ant-nvidia post, I think you will find I have been recommending fermi a lot to members on here recently, hardly anti-nvidia now is it. Maybe you should read Fire Wizard's post at the top of this board, yet again someone comes in to a thread accusing someone of being something with no grounds whatsoever and nothing in reply to my posts that are on topic and substantiated in this thread.

Real simple this one, a 480 is the card for you, the extra VRAM helps out at maz rez, just make sure you have adequate case cooling as they do run hot as well as a decent PSU, you can pick a 480 up for £380 so that's what I would do.

To be fair he has been a lot more objective lately or atleast keeping up with current GPU trends - compared to certain people who just bang the same old anti-nVidia drum even when its tired and worn out. Your not gonna see many completely unbias posts on these forums anyhow :D

My own opinion is the GTX470 provides good competition with the 5850 - but only when you compare overclocked value for money (with both overclocked) - out the box the GTX470 struggles to compare to the 5850.

Due to the release of many overclocked versions of the 5850 it has now replaced the 5870 as the GTX470 challenger.

what is the 465 competing with?

480 is 5870 am i right?

There are two ways you can look at it:

You can compare by hierarchy, or by price. NVIDIA is not trying to undercut ATi on price, they feel the proprietary features they offer add value and make their cards worth more.

So even if a GTX480 was exactly the same speed as a 5870, they would sell it for more because they offer PhysX, forced ambient occlusion, 3d Vision, 3d Vision Surround, and CUDA.

LoL they can't undercut coz it costs so much to make and the Nvidia features mean nothing to the majority of gamers. Notice how prices on fermi keep dropping every week and stock levels never seem to depreciate, not selling well at all.
