Our old but normally reliable Corolla has decided that it won't allow the lock in the driver's door to turn and lock the car. The key will only move a fraction to the left or right. I can lock the car by manually flipping the central locking from inside the car, using the passenger door for access but this is far from convenient.

Anyone have any tips on what I could try before taking it in to the garage?

Not a massive amount of help, but my mum has had this happen a couple of times to her Yaris, it's not something that the dealership thought could be fixed so she had the lock barrel replaced twice. Being a dealership, i wouldn't be suprised if it could be fixed without this though

Sounds like one or more of the tumblers in the lock has jammed in place. You might be able to carefully disassemble, lubricate, and reassemble, but it's not guaranteed to work.

This.

Dads passat had the same fault, part of the assembly that makes up the barrel had given up inside. He got another from the scrappy and replaced the knackered bits inside his with the second hand ones.

DAm my father in law had the same issue this morning. Had to dismantle the whole door. Now he can only lock his car using the boot lock:D

One of the girls at work had the same problem, so she came in to find the nearest man to ask for help, me.

I tried it, scratched my head a bit before I said 'i thought your ka had leather'.... She said 'ooh yeah' and got into the ka that was parked 2 spaces down

LOL now thats funny

I remember when i was with a friend coming out of Tesco and we wandered over to his fiesta, unlocked the boot, opened it and were shocked to see a pram and other various bits and pieces.

We then quickly realised it wasn't his car, closed the boot, locked it and the wandered a few cars down to his.

Seems the boot locks on old fiesta were universal?
