Options for selling my car

Hi all,

I'm emigrating to Australia soon and will have to get rid of my car in about a month (RX8 231, 2004).

I'm very busy and i'm going to need my car right up until the last minute so really i'm wondering what the different options for trade sale are and what are your tips for trade sale beyond the usual 'shop around'.

I'm going to try my local Mazda dealer first as they've always serviced the car.

What other options are there apart from dealers? I've been hearing about this webuyanycar place but looks like a bit of a rip off.

Thanks

I emigrated to Africa in '97 and needed the car up until the last minute. I left it with my parents, who very kindly said they'd let people view it for a month but after that it would be better off just sold to a dealer to avoid them hassle. In the end, it sold in a couple of weeks.

It could be an option but i'd rather not put the burden on the parents. I would just like it done and dusted before I leave. I'm happy to take the hit on the private vs trade price.

Take it with you as it'll cost you 3-4 times what its worth here to buy it there.

btw, I'm jealous.

This. Aus prices are silly. My sister paid a stupid amount for her car out there. :o

I just want to be rid of it. The headache involved in shipping, registering it, duty, etc is something I can do without. I really don't have the time to sort it all out either! I've got 4 weeks tops.

It seems any car not manufactured in Oz is expensive but locall ymade cars (Ford, Holden) are quite cheap. An XR6 would do me for a while as i've been looking for a change for a while. Plan is to give it 6 months and then get a GTR :)

btw, I'm jealous.

When I visited Oz last Novermber I decided to tap up my work Oz branch and met them for a coffee. 8 Months later i'm there on a re-negotiated pacakge and 457 visa (lots of nice tax breaks). Sydney here I come :D

GTR is £92000 in Australia, you must be minted

Yeah, I was quite shocked to discover the mark up on such cars out there. New cars seem to hold their value very well so as long as the depreciation over three years is no more than $60k i'm happy. My work give me $15k car allowance towards a car anyway (per year)

The issue is getting credit when there which is why i'll likely have to wait 6 months to build up some additional cash for deposit (I hesitant to bring too much UK money over due to the exhange rate) and then get a bank loan which must be no longer than my visa - so 3.6 months.

The issue is the longer I build up cash the shorter my visa becomes so it's a dog-eat-dog situation. If I stall then i'll be unable to get a decent loan or i'll just be saddled with too much on the monthly payment.

Insurance will be high but many places accept UK no claims bonus :)

Are there not companies who will organise the import and paperwork.

Lots of jap imports over there from what i hear.

You could try a car auction not the bay a proper one never looked into it myself but I bet you would get more from there than webuyanycar

Shout me the morning you leave, I'm sure we can sort summit out. :D

Good luck in Auss.

You've got to take into account just how much it costs for shipping, duties, taxes, checks, conversion and registration though, and the amount of headache and hassle involved in getting all this sorted. I'd only really do that if I had a car I loved and simply couldn't get here in Oz.

Is it really going to be that much hassle to just take the car with you? I can't believe it'd be any more of an arduous process than buying one when you're there.

Yes, yes it is. Buying a car is simply a case of finding one you want and handing money over. Shipping your car over is a logistical (and expensive) nightmare, by all accounts.

I guess that's subjective isn't it? I've found this - looks fairly straight forward.

Not really. Buying a car, you visit a few dealerships, hand money over, get insured, job done.

Importing a car, well, take a look here.

If you think that doing all that is no more arduous than buying a car, I've got to wonder how exactly you go about buying a car!

It's never going to be as straight forward as buying a car out there, and thats a guide for touring with your car not importing it as a resident. Besides, there is no need to faff about importing an RX8 if you've got £100k to blow on a GT next year anyway :p

could you not sell it now, buy a cheapo banger...and let a mate flog it for you once you are done (or just leave it in the airport carpark?)

This is what I'd do unless the prices from dealers are decent. It may also be worth advertising it privately now anyway and coming to an arrangement with a buyer on when they pick it up, covering an extra time you need a car with a cheap hire car.
