wierd booting problem with high power cards

with the rig in sig iv got some wierd issues going on and cant find much about on google.

with the rig in sig a few weeks ago with 2x5770's it shut down and booted fine, problems sarted when i used my mrs's 8800gtx. plugged it in and computer booted but no display, thought nevermind and got on buying my current 5870.

same issue, plugged it in and no video, tested it in the wifes and it booted up no problem. to make the thing boot i have to turn on the computer without the graphics card plugged in, then plug in the card while its running and reset it, then it boots up fine.

ran all sorts of tests, everything works perfectly, doesnt seem to be any hardware problems, also tested this method with the 8800gtx, it works with that card using the above method.

has anyone ever heard of this before? my psu is a month or so old and all voltages at full load are spot on.

iv tried different bios's for the motherboard with no luck, iv had it running stock as a dual core and still the same. iv tried pretty much every bios option i can find.

tearing my hair out on this one!!
 
if youve gone through every bios setting, I dont think this will make a difference, but have you cleared cmos and turned off the onboard video? (if there is a setting)
 
Yes, iv turned off the onboard, the 8800 just emitted a high pitched whine which points to either the mobo or psu not delivering power to either the pcie slot or more likely the power connectors in time to power up the card
 
Straight off i would say psu problem could you take the one out of your wifes pc and try your setup with that psu if it boots up fine you know your problem.

Sounds like the most likely problem. Make sure you check the connectors, make sure a pin didn't get loose or get pushed out when changing cards.
