Cleaning EGR Valve (BMW related)

I've been doing a lot of reading lately about potential problems with 1 series and some ways in which to prevent them

One of the ways that is mentioned a lot is cleaning the EGR valve, which apparently, although requires taking bits out of the engine bay, isn't as hard a job as it sounds and is quite rewarding if done properly. It gets clogged up anyway over time, but doing short journeys like I have to do sometimes makes it even worse, and eventually can get clogged up to the point performance can be affected

I've seen a couple of guides on a few forums I go on, but they're all for more than just the EGR valve, stripping the whole intake manifold infact. I don't want to go that far so was wondering if anyone had done it on here

I'm guessing, although there will be big changes across the different series engine bays, but because of the way the EGR works it should roughly be the same layout for that part and removing it/refitting it should be similar

If anyones done it, I'd really appreciate some help. I really want to do it, but never really done anything like this before but figured it's always handy to learn.

Cheers

I totally removed the EGR valve on my Fabia vRS and replaced it with a straight through pipe, prevents any future problems. It threw up a engine warning light which I got mapped out.

Don't know if anyone has made an EGR delete kit for the 1 series, have a look on Allard motorsport though they do EGR delete kits.

Hi Gaverick

Yeah I did look at getting the system removed completely, but a part of me wants to keep it just because I have the whole "if it wasn't doing any good, BMW wouldn't have put it there" etc, so I'll give it a go at cleaning it out first and then if it does ever cause an issue then look at taking it out

'If it wasn't doing any good, BMW wouldn't have put it there' tbh.. they don't realy care about that. It's all about getting the emissions a little better, which is a complete farce.

Find a way of removing it, all it's doing at the moment is clogging up your intake manifold over time.

Who mapped out your EGR fault code Gaverick?

I got it done by Jabbasport through one of their agents, MB Motorsport, who are based in Hebburn.

I really would recommend removing the EGR, all of the exhaust soot combined with the oil vapour from the CCV (I'm guessing BMW also feed the crank case breather back in to the intake like VW) combines to create a thick sticky tar than sticks to the EGR valve and intake manifold, and in some cases reduces the intake diameter by up to 60%.

The only reason BMW added an EGR is to comply with emissions standards.

Cheers, whilst not exactly the same i've removed the EGR and Airpump from my car, every 500miles or so a fault code will pop up so need to get someone to map it out.
