I'm no environmentalist, but I would start with taxing the Hell out of those stupid 4x4s (the ones driven by posh ****s) and high-performance cars that do sod all MPG. Apart from the extra wear & tear on our already pot-holed roads they are using up the finite amount of petrol quicker.

I would also put heavy taxes on second homes in places that have very limited housing (Cornwall etc). Bloody Location Location Location always seems to feature some Londonite looking for a second home on the coast...

I'm sure my ideas are riddled with problems but it would make me feel better!

yes they are, why tax a bigger car, when the only thing which matters is how much fuel you burn.

Doing 10miles a week in a big 4x4 is goign to use far less petrol than someone doing 1000miles in an eco car.

As for taxing 2nd homes that wont raise much revenue. That is better at stopping holiday homes and reducing price so locals can afford to buy.

I don't see much short term solution, we can cut public spending which we are doing. Long-term we need to cut benefits and we need to increase our exports and become more self sufficient.
I would love to see government funding and legislation to help research and manufacturing in certain areas. Green energy, GM/dna and other such research, car/transport and computer driven areas. With a series look and competition to replace the humble car with a much better system. We could be world leaders in these areas and export them to the world. we are in a great place for things like wind turbines, but i doubt we will capitalise on it. Well do what we did with are nuclear research.

If you actually can't work (disabled etc) then you get benefits and care.

If you actually can't be BOTHERED to work, you get sod all.

Stop giving chavs their benefits.

This.....!

I work with a girl who work 3 days a week (single mum) she banks loads with her benefits! grrrr.....! if she works more than 3 days a week she looses benefits so wont do any overtime! how is that fair!

The reasons why you are not Chancellor are abundant and clear.

e : I would run you over in my high performance car in the hope that it somehow made the world a better place :)

Stop all benefits of every type and let the people die or fend for themselves.

Execute all criminals in prison and sell the land to property developers. In future, any person who would ordinarily be sent to prison would instead be executed.

Sack 2/3rds of management in all Public organisations and make the remaining 1/3rd do their work for no extra money.

I'm sure I'll think of more options later.

Stop giving billions in aid to countries like India and China who are happily wasting trillions of their own money on things like space exploration.

Also pull the troops out of the middle east, it's a bottomless pit and a war that we cannot possibly win.

Legalise cannabis and tax it heavily.

This is probably a good way to go.

If we decriminalized all previously illegal drugs (as they have done in Portugal) then a vast portion of money could be made for the government.

It is estimated that if the USA followed this route the government would bring in $33 billion in taxes. (They currently spend $44 billion fighting it).
Secondly, there has been no increase (but the opposite) of drug use in Portugal. This seems like a win win situation.

I can't find any estimated figures for the UK, but there is a certainty that it will bring in vast amounts of money and will allow for deeper issues to be effectively tackled.

Also, withdraw all deployed combat troops.

Start by having a fundraiser a bit like red nose day/children in need and ask the general public for donations.

That should raise a couple of quid.

Employ people at the job centre who actually care if people are looking for work, or are just claiming the dole because they can and have no intention of finding a job.

Print more money on the sly though so no one knows and pay the money back????

Collect all of the change sitting in wishing wells/fountains.

The problem with wellfare is that on the one hand if the government allows children to live in poverty the public will demand action. But on the other, the government provides a living that is actually quite manageable (house for free, tabs and booze money, free methadone etc) then obviously some people are going to take this route.

How do you reform wellfare but at the same time ensure that the children are adequately provided for.

Personally, one way to save money would be to scarp National Insurance and raise both personal and corporation tax. Makes it much simpler and you get rid of one whole section the government departments with one stroke.
