Well, my HTC Desire arrived today on T-Mobile; for the most part its great. I do have a few issues though.

1. I cannot text to/from it?? just gives an error saying it cannot do so. When you send a text to it, the recipient does not get an error. (I can call out from it and it can be called so the SIM is working). Took me ages to find out what number I had been given from T-Mobile (why don't they write it inside the SIM packet!!)
2. I can connect to my Wifi at home; but cannot for the life of me connect via 3G? How do I do this? I have it set to use data connection when Wifi is not available.
3. The back cover is pap! It clips in 'mostly', but there is a sliver that never quite gets in. It all clicks together, but its just annoyign. I can see over time that this will get worse. Is this standard? I have adjusted teh little plastic clips where possible but still to no joy.
4. My last niggle is that it can unlock itself quite easily; whilst its the top button and on screen slide, its very easy to bypass this if it was in my pocket moving about. Anyone else counter this or am I doing it all wrong?

Lastly, do they come with a 2 year warranty? The documentation seems to suggest it does. Pretty cool if it does.

Apologies for my ignorance; a bit out of touch with mobile technologies.

Thanks :)

1 and 2 will be down to your sim card having not been activated yet by T-mobile. I had to wait 3-4 days for it to start working. You should receive a text welcoming you when it's done.

3. The back cover fixing is a little flimsy and I think it's usual for it to fit better in some places than others.

4. Have no problems with this although I keep mine in a full leather case.

Not sure on warranty. Would have thought it was only for 12 months though.

Ah, so do I need to contact them; or is it just a case that I sit tight. I ordered from mobilephonesdirect rather than directly from the provider?

OK - will persist with back cover. I have seen you can get replacements.

The Warranty book - said cover for 2 years, which i was really surprised by.

Oh, and thanks, very much appreciated.

Also got mine from MPD. It's just a case of of waiting. Obviously if it's not sorted after 3-4 days I'd give them a ring to find out what's wrong but I'm sure it'll get activated within that time.

Do you know about ringing t-mobile to get the mobile internet changed and switching flexible booster?

When going through a third part seller, such as MPD, you will be put on the web 'n' walk service that gives you a 1gb limit and a speed limit of approx. 360kb/s. If you ring T-mobile tech support, once your line has been activated, tell them that you want to be put on the web 'n' walk plus which will give you a 3gb limit and no speed restrictions. You can then use your flexible booster, which was used for the internet, for something else. It states on their website that android phones require an "always on connection" so all contracts should with unlimited internet as standard, and that you then get a flexible booster to use as you please.

Well my texts/GPS etc are now working; thank you!

Going back to speaking to tech-supp and getting myself switched from 'Web N Walk' to 'Web n Walk Plus' - will they do that for free then? Why is it not like that to begin with? Seems odd that I should have to phone up to get a faster connection, yet it be free? Also, you say tech-supp; I presume customer services would be no good?

Thanks again for all the help; much appreciated!!

Speak to Tech Support, Customer Services are useless when it comes to anything technical. Apparently MPD register any old phone with t-mobile so you get slower net access. I just told them I was unhappy with the speed I was getting and was sure I should be on the web 'n' walk plus because it stated on their website that android phones should come with it as standard. I was then free to use my booster for unlimited texts. See below link for success from XDA forums. I can't find the larger thread where it all started.

Ok - so after numerous attempts I finally got through to tech supp only to be put on hold and then disconnected.

I call back, go through exactly the same process yet land up at customer services!?! Anyway, the woman I spoke to 'spoke to someone in tech supp' and has said she has upgraded the account to WebnWalk+. She said she will call me back when it is activated on the account as its not instant. I have taken her name ... (lol!).

Anyway, is there a way of checking that this has been done? From what I understand the + service would normally cost an extra tenner a month; although she said that there will be no cost.

So,

What can I use to test the speed?

I probably would never have known that had you not replied, so thank you!!

Hmm interesting. I just rang up myself in an attempt to get my Web n Walk upgraded to Web n Walk Plus, the lady on the other end said it wasn't a free upgrade and would be £5 a month. I also got my Desire from mobilephonesdirect and made sure I mentioned this.

Ring back and try again, I wouldn't mention who its from, just say you read on the website that the phone should come with web n walk plus included.

I did that initially, I only mentioned I got it from MPD once it was certain she wouldn't give it for free. Apparently there was no option to upgrade for free which was strange. Obviously some people have different methods, I'll have to try again and hope I get a different person on the other end. :p Are people sure they are getting it for free and not being charged £5 for the privilege?

I'm in the process with arguing with them at the moment! They, like yourself, refused me the free upgrade so I am escalating it higher!

Let me know if you manage to get them to change their decision. :D

Came across this:

Pay monthly plans which include internet on your phone on an Android phone
You'll need internet coverage, check it at t-mobile.co.uk/streetcheck. Remember that you can only use your internet on your phone Booster in the UK and you can't use your phone as a modem or use web'n'walk Plus for peer to peer file sharing, or making internet phone calls. *Internet on your phone comes with a fair use policy of 3GB a month. We'll monitor how much you send and receive each calendar month so that we can protect our network for all our internet on your customers. If you use more than your fair use policy amount, we won't charge you any more, but we may restrict how you can use your plan, depending on how often you go over your amount and by how much. As your phone is always connected to the internet, if you remove your internet on your phone Plus Booster from your account you'll automatically be charged up to £1 every day. That £1 a day rate has its own fair use policy and other legal stuff, which you can see here: t-mobile.co.uk/services/uk/fairuse/#fup5.

I managed to get them to change their mind by continually asking customer service why I wasn't issued with Web'n'Walk+ when I was given an android phone and stating that the speeds that I'd been getting were incredibly slow when in HSDPA areas...They contacted tech support who put it onto my account to 'see if it improved my speed issues'..It did! :D
