As the subject header really, would an upgrade from 295 SLI to 480 SLI be worth doing from a performance perspective?

I suspect not.

Yeah I suspect not as well, but you do gain DX11 support and better scaling with fermi, scaling with 295 SLI was not that hot so it's not a clear cut answer, if you could sell on your 295's for a decent amount then I personally would go 480 SLI which will let you max out the eye candy more than the 295's will. 295's have under 1GB of memory as well so you gain big time with the 480's 1500mb of vram.

Have you got 2 x GTX295 and so quad SLi or just 1 x GTX295 and are thinking about 2 x 480GTX's?

If using 2 x GTX295's and so Quad SLi then it was never that effective so 2 x 480GTX will actually probs be better plus added DX11 etc

If you just 1 x GTX295 then yes 2 x 480GTX will blow it out the water sideways!

I'd have thought it was worth doing if you play at high res - but I've never in a position to test. 2x GTX295 overall really isn't that useful IMO as it lacks the VRAM to properly run the resolutions and AA levels where the 3rd and 4th GPUs can be put to work and just 1x GTX295 will get silly framerates at <1920x anyhow.

Looking at your sig i see that you are using the dell 30" so a res of 2560x1600, with the 2x480 you should be able to use more eyecandy then the 295s because of the Vram.
check with someone else though as im not that sure.

I would have said definitely worth it, as I recall GTX295 is something like ~10% faster than GTX480 and I'm sure that 2 GPU SLI scales way better than 4 GPU SLI

GTX 295 = 1,792mb
GTX 480 = 1,536mb

GTX 295 Quad SLI = 3,584mb
GTX 480 SLI = 3072mb

How have the 480's got more vram?

Back to point however, the 480's will scale better. Generally going over 2 GPUs equals in poor scaling plus DX11 is a nice bonus, just better have some waterblocks ready for them.

Obviously 2x 480 will be better than a single 295.

Interesting responses, thanks everyone - My system is in my sig, so I've currently got 295 SLI with 1KW PSU and a Skeleton case with 30" Dell. So I think I've got the ability to try the upgrade if I decide to.

Is the 480 going to have a price drop in the near future? Would I be right in saying the Skeleton case would be able to deal with the heat generated by those bad boys or is it a water cooling only club?

I think from looking around you will be looking at a minimum of 1200w on the psu to run a pair of 480s with overclocking, another chap on here with 2 470's was pulling 1kw at full load

It would e touch n go, the chap a couple of posts up has 480 sli, he's your best bet to ask a few questions to :) i'm just a lowly 5870 owner :)

GTX480 will blow it away above 1920x1200 & be at least 10-15% ahead at that res but as you have a 30" the difference will be around 20-25% more @ 2560x1600.
