hey folks ive recently started my new job, which has took just over 6 months from initial application to me starting (due to various delays). on offer of the job, i made it clear that i already had a prebooked holiday, which was well 5 weeks in advance, as i knew that this could have implications due to being 2 weeks after the start date. so asked whether it would be ok or whether i should try make alternative arrangements. but i was told that it would be fine as they usually honour new staff holidays.

the training has turned out to be a 6 week affair, but my trainer today made it pretty clear she doesnt want anyone to miss any of the training. i had a quiet word with her and told her about my hols, but she seems pretty cheesed off to say the least and says its the first shes heard of it. shes going to get back to me tomorrow after she spoken to personel, so where do i stand on this scenario?

i know but i dont want to be seen as the new guy whos coming in and throwing their weight about, and being in the bad books from day 1!

Their problem.

I started my summer job 3 weeks a go on Thursday. Gave them all the days I couldn't work, including my holiday which I was the following Wednesday, and some days in July and August.

Acting deputy manager hadn't told the right night manager, he had told a different one who hadn't told my night manager. He was like you can't tell me this now (for the holiday) and I told him it's not my problem you've got communication problems, end of.

Tell them to sort it out different training days for when you are back. :)

But you won't be that person, you have given them adequate notification already, if they haven't informed the relative parties of this then in no way can the blame be pinned on you, they will have to honour your holiday and allow you the time off and rearrange the training dates to a time that is more appropriate.

well being the kinda guy i am, i offered to stay longer after work and do the work/training missed over the next week and half to make up for it, heck i even said id take the work away on hols!

cheers guys i just wanted to get other people opinons rather than going in and making my own stance tomorrow. its just that im in serious need of a holiday, especially after i was pretty much dumped from a 4 year relationship a couple weeks back

I understand where you are coming from but take you break and enjoy your time away. Your holiday is your time that you are paying for. Relax and chill out. :)

Going anywhere nice?

I wouldnt worry about it. If you notified them before you started and when they asked then there isnt a lot they can complain about really.

Sucks, and I know what you mean about looking bad, but as the others have said, it's their fault, not yours. So don't worry about it :p

off to zante with a couple of the lads, first time ive been away for ages with uni and all so im really looking forward to it.

id of just prefered for them when i enquired for them to have said look theres a 6 week training period, try and make alternative arrangements. to top it off the job was meant to start around march !

It's their problem.

Indeed.

I had the same with a new member of staff. I got as much done with him as I could, let him go on his hols, and he came back and worked his arse off to get back up to speed. He continued to shine and am really happy with his progress. He did put in a lot of work to keep on top of things though.

As long as you're willing to do the same they shouldn't have a problem. Eitherway, it's not your issue, since you gave them plenty of notice. However, perhaps to butter up the trainer/manager, suggest what you're willing to do to catch up?

already done sir, i offered to do the extra hours after the normal time to get the proposed work completed, and like said earlier even said id be willing to take stuff on hols to work on.

will give you guys an update tomorrow, fingers crossed!

If they still play the arse then you've done everything I'd expect. It's their own issue for having a crap internal communications policy.

UPDATE:

hey folks after going into work day expecting the worst, it has been given the ok by the trainer, i think i may have just caught him on a bad day yesterday which only intensified due to the lack of communication within the company. but everythings worked out ok in the end! roll on me hols :D

Glad to hear you got it sorted bud, it's a horrible thing to go through that in any situation let alone a brand new job. Enjoy your hols!
