I've just built myself a new rig, well at least partly (see sig - it's not complete yet).. and what some people might find odd in this build is my choice of gfx card. A legacy GTX 280, bought as a spur of the moment thing to breath life into my old system for a while, is plonked in there.

Now this card, in my new rig basically runs anything I want to play on it without any problem... however, with games moving forever forward and the advent of DX11, and the inability to buy a cheapo 2nd card and SLI I think it's time to move on...

Now obviously based on my current platform, I should really be thinking ATI.. with the possibility of crossfire further down the line.. so really not being that up on ATI's stuff... where should I be aiming, to achieve comparable hopefully better performance than the 280?

Would a standard 5870 cut it? I've been looking at the Asus 5870 Matrix, primarily cos they look pretty.. but they're a bit on the steep side, and I just think if I'm going to push the boat out and spend that much initially I might as well go for a 5970...

Or should I just sack the whole idea, keep what I've got and wait for the 6000 series?

...Open to the floor :)

a gtx280 is still a more than capable card

it will play anything at the moment and anything on the horizon

if you game at 1900X1200 or less then keep hold of it until the next big advance in graphics

If your system runs well at the moment, I would suggest waiting.

The 5870 will be a good deal faster than the GTX 280 - but it still isn't a massive performance jump. I would suggest either biting the bullet and get a 5970 now or wait until later this year when AMD's new "Southern Islands" graphics cards come out.

I wouldn't bother. You're going to have to spend a fair amount of cash to see a relatively small gain. As for DX11, it depends if you want a new card just in case or just in time.

Got an overclocked GTX 275 here so similar performance and i'm going to wait until next generation. This generation has been a bit dissapointing in my eyes.

Don't get me wrong, I was tempted by a 5870 but didnt think it was worth it.

I was also tempted to go for a 5870, but i was put off by the prices. Bought another gtx 275 for a good price and went sli instead.

I've just bought a gtx280 for £135 off the fleabay, i'm hoping that'll last at least a year - it was time to retire the trusty old 8800gtx.

I was going to get a brand new lastest gen card, but from what i've read on the net, the performance jump wasn't great enough to warrant the £250+ cost.

Same here, I still have a GTX280, in my case a factory overclocked version running at 700Mhz core and I need to spend silly money to get a big difference as anything reasonably priced isn't much faster.

I was just about to post a similar thread to this!

Out of interest, any recommendations for a decent after market cooler for the gtx 280?

My stock one tends to run a little loud and hot.....
