Hi Guys

Would like some advice on the best 40 / 42 television around. Ive been told the panasonics are very good but am not sure what to go for. I have a samsung at the moment but its quite old now and when i plug my laptop in to play a film over hdmi it looks crap. Its only 720p

Want to be spending between 500 and 600 but could spend more if it was really worth it :)

Also is it worth having freesat HD / freeveiw HD built in ? are these services any good

Anyone fancy chipping in ? probably something that every member of ocuk has purchased ... What do we think of the panasonic G10, is it worth the £599 i can get it for or am i better off getting something 100 / 150 quid cheaper ~?

We went for the P42S21B and so far its performed brilliantly. Apparently the panel is based on last years G10, need I say more. Of course if your someone who wants all the controls under the sun, then yes look elsewhere, you'll certainly pay for them.

But for what we paid for it (£619 from the high street), it was/is a bargain. It also came with a free panasonic blu-ray player and a sony 7" photo frame, which made the deal even better.

Like everyone else, we have found the cinema setting to be the best. As for it having a freeview hd tuner, well we don't use it, as we have all that via a sat reciever, but its good to have a backup of sorts.

Would have been nice to have gone for one of the the 46"/50" versions, but for our size room, that would have been overkill.

The only negative, I have with this particular set is the omission of a usb connection. Buts thats just me.

The G10 is a good buy at that price, it's a good set. If you can stretch to a G/V20 even better :)

What do you think of the LG suggested by the above poster ? I could accommodate a 50' and would rather get the 50 over the 42 ....

Max budget is around £600 ive decided i dont want to spend anymore ...

Don't really know much on the LGs, only looked at Panasonics when I was buying (bought a V10 last year).

Try over on AVForums as they'll have lots of discussion on it no doubt.

I expect that is more down to your laptop than the screen, there is nothing wrong with 720p. You will get much better results using a proper Blu-Ray player or DVD Upscaler.

You can't really go far wrong with some of the more recent Panasonic Plasmas. But it does depend what you plan on using the TV for most, HD films, SD Tv, HD Tv, Gaming etc. Admittedly when it comes to using it connected to a PC or Laptop high resolution 1080p screens look better.

Get freeview HD built in if you can get it in your area, better channel selection than Freesat, same HD channels though as far as I'm aware. Although often external recorders and receivers offer better picture quality and more features, recording etc. So I wouldn't personally ignore a screen just because it doesn't have it built in.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

My mate works for a high street sound/audio retailer and swears by the Phillips series 7 and series 9 sets as being about the best around at the moment.

He's got the 21:9 Phillips tv, I watched some stuff on it the other day and it was fantastic - wish I could afford one ! Having said that I'm not too disappointed in my Panny plasma for the price.

I've just ordered the LG for £570, see Hotukdeals.com for more information! I was tempted to pick one up from RicherSounds but I am 99% sure a 50" TV won't fit in the back of my RS Clio 182. It is being delivered on Friday, so fingers crossed it is as epic as people say it is. :D

TV arrived, it's a beast, very thin though :) I had a quick look at some Blu-Rays (Transformer:ROF, Fast & Furious, Avatar & Iron Man) and as expected they look simply stunning, easily the best I've ever seen. Everything is so clear and the colours are spot on. Assuming quidco tracks, for the £552 I paid for it I am chuffed to bits.
