Aid agencies launch Niger appeal

You know I always feel guilty when I read something like this, purely because the first thing that pops into my head isn't "Oh those poor people" but "MOVE SOMEWHERE ELSE"

I mean surely there has to be a point where we realise that all we are aiding these people in doing is continuing to live in poverty.

You have a point, but you make it sound like they all have an easy choice, some times it's nigh on impossible for poor people, starving already to just move like that.

Well of course for a country, an entire people, it's a ridiculous notion, that idea stems mainly from the endless "Mufatwe has to walk 5 miles to fetch clean water" adverts, it sickens me that none of them have the heart to tell poor Mufatwe that it would probably take less effort to drag his entire village there by his ears than continue walking back and forth to a well with a bucket for the rest of his life.

My main concern with aid and the general idea behind "aiding" countries such as Niger is that it's the equivalent of keeping a terminally ill patient on life support when there is no hope of a cure, all we are doing is prolonging there suffering with vague promises of "It will get better one day" or "Life is important" which all being reasonable promises and in a perfect world would be completely reasonable promises to make.

Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world. All we end up doing is making a big song and dance about "HUMAN RIGHTS" and "EVERYONE DESERVES THE SAME" when we are just sticking a plaster over poverty and pulling a sheet over our eyes to make ourselves think we are making a difference.

Poverty happens > UN goes in > Bono makes a speech > A nation eats for a year > The western world thinks it's done a good job > Poverty happens because nothing has CHANGED.

It's the glorious "Give a man a fish" story, just on a much larger scale.

Anyway those over paid footballers should give their 1 month wages if they can't even win on their matches in the world cup!

England players already donate their match fees to charity and many football clubs give to charity as well. It was shown when that nurse went around all the premier league clubs for money

We really should help them but they will pull an Ethiopia in years to come, their population will rocket out of control. Propped up by western aid, if they want help then they need to enforce population control.

Exactly how are they going to do that, when the only support system in the whole country / region is to have as many kids a you can to ensure they'll look after you when you can no longer look after yourself.
