nvidia 480gtx or ati 5870

I was and am thinking about selling my 5850s in crossfire and getting a 480 (the new drivers from ati are crap when it comes to crossfire) but I think the 5870 is just as good ant it?

If for gaming then I would say a 5870.. if you would use cuda etc from nvidia then go with the 480.

If your running multiple video cards in either SLI or Crossfire your bound to get driver issues no matter who's camp you stick your flag into, this has always been the one of the draw backs of going with muliple video card setups and the reason why I perfer to stick to just one powerful card. Just for the record you will lose performacne by going from 2x HD5850's to just 1 GTX480 and it will cost you money in both the short term and long term, if I were you I would stick with the 10.4a drivers (which seem to be stable) and read the feedback on future releases before updating.

I did read some reviews and they was good.. but didn't think any problem would be given from crossfire... I was thinking about changing to a 480 anyway for cuda as the programs I work with use it :)

I'm going to format sometime this week as I'm going to get 2x ssd's in raid 0 and stick my old one into my laptop.. when I do I will try and find 10.5 or 10.4 drivers.. If you have a link to were I could get them for 64bit windows 7 with the profiles i would be great-full.

I will do

I play games the likes of need for speed, football manager, test drive, the sims, pro evo, the settlers

as for future games the new versions of NFS, fm, td, ts, pes

If that's what you play then a 5870 is more then enough. If you want to save some money skip on the Nvidia card as your going to be maxing out those games on a 5870 anyway.
That's what I would do personally.

right definitely going 5870, is it worth the extra for the xfx xxx version

Nah not really. The extra frame of two gained isn't enough to warrant the outlay. I'd probably guess if you saw the standard and overclocked version running side by side in game you wouldn't notice much if any difference especially with the games you seem to like playing. I'd get the cheaper one with the AVP game.
With the money saved go and treat yourself to a few new games.
Enjoy your card;)

480gtx consumes more then 5970 , with 600 powersuply i would go with 5870 uses less power a lot less and it is cooler , and not that slower

now im really not sure, it seems that the following is correct if not please correct

nvidia: faster, hotter to run, more power required, better drivers, cost more
ati: slower, cooler to run, less power needed, worse drivers, costs less

Pretty much. I don't think the 480 was really a WOW when it came out it disappointed a lot of people. Not really worth the extra cash you will a get a marginally better card for quite a bit more money!

i have bought an asus 5870 so i didnt need to flash bios to oc it, powered by 610w supply and happy with with it, i dont think the gtx 480 is worth extra cash.
